Hacker - imagine yourself at 70. I've seen women whose earlobes sag just from wearing regular earrings - it's NOT attractive.
My granddaughter recently learned a lesson about how 'decorating' herself could affect her life choices. She got a tat on the back of her neck - then decided she wanted to go into the Marines - they turned her down because of the tattoo.
Another example I can think of is a friend of mine who is an old feminist who refuses to shave her legs. Now, I'm a confirmed earth mother who has never worn make up and I dress very simply. But, my daughters have confided in my that they are extremely grateful that I don't have hairy legs like my friend does. I'm not saying that we have an obligation to shield our teenagers and pre-teens from our embarrassing them, since it's an impossible task. My point is that our kids like us to be somewhat conservative and conventional. Also, your unusual earrings will make other parents suspicious that you are into drugs or worse. They might not want your child to associate with theirs. Your daughter is probably aware of that.
jls - OMG, you mean you're supposed to SHAVE your legs? I thought that was what long pants were for!!;)

Those tunnels are disgusting. If you did that as a nurse, I'm sure you would have trouble getting a job, don't you think? You would scare people off, esp. the elderly, IMO. Do you have the tunnels already? It was hard to understand your post.

Heh heh, that's those darned internet abbreviations, they are rather distracting.
Yes, the OP has gaping holes in his ears already. But, he lives in L.A., he should be able to get a job somewhere there.
There were a couple of nurses where I did clinicals that had gauges in their ears. I think one was a 4g and the other had 0g they usually wore plugs in but if they wore their tunnels they would put the hoop earrings through it to make it a little less obvious. No one said anything to them. I have 16 piercings in my ears and no one has ever made a negative comment about them. I just don't wear my huge hoops when I'm in the hospital. I would just go by what the employee handbook says and go with that.
Please God...if I ever become sick, could you please send a well-dressed, professional nurse who knows how to use good English and cares more about my well-being than his/her own. I want a nurse who understands that personal items they have to adorn in order to be who they are can be left at home without fear of them turning into someone they don't want to be if they can't wear it for 12 hrs out of their day. I am not sure what type of ailment I may have, but I need to know that I am in a hospital being cared for by someone who wants to be there to help me, not to show off making me think I was at a circus...Amen.
I don't judge others by their appearance so i have no probs with tats, tunnel earrings, forked tongues etc as long as your a good nurse, who cares?
However, unfortunately theres a large number of narrow minded, judgemental ppl out there who DO have a problem with it (often elderly ppl) and so you might be discriminated against.
