Published

have any of u guyz seen/met a nurse with huge big hole on both ears (tunnel)

coz i was just wonderin... :p hopefully if i passed NCLEX (still w8ting for result) :( i'll be the nurse with a tunnel earrings (huge hole gauge 4) and tattos as well with shaggy emo hair hehehe

weird nurse ha.. :p hopefully ill pass (fingers crossed)

and dear God i also want a nurse who doesn't judged people only by their appearance because i know its not the outer thing that matters.. its whats on the inside... heart and mind

Amen

Please God...if I ever become sick, could you please send a well-dressed, professional nurse who knows how to use good English and cares more about my well-being than his/her own. I want a nurse who understands that personal items they have to adorn in order to be who they are can be left at home without fear of them turning into someone they don't want to be if they can't wear it for 12 hrs out of their day. I am not sure what type of ailment I may have, but I need to know that I am in a hospital being cared for by someone who wants to be there to help me, not to show off making me think I was at a circus...Amen.

AMEN.. thank God there are still some people who respect the freedom of expressing the likes of others. :)

Live and let live. Who cares what one wears in their ears. Doesn't bother me a bit as a nurse or as a patient. Be clean, competant, and caring, that's all I ask.[/quote']

hehe its a good thing i'm not on that age bracket :)

beep..beep :)

[Heh, heh, that's so non judgemental of you! ;) Those elderly people, they're all alike!!! :trout: Don't trust anyone over 30, that's what I say!!]

LOL...hey i'm only going by my own experiences....

i respect the opinion but isnt it too harsh to judge people by how they look... to tell you honestly i havent taken any illegal drugs, i dare you guyz for a drug test ;) and i dont have any criminal records either... its just the way of expressing things... thats why...

its kinda therapeutic for us on expressing our deep thoughts in life with this type of personality... and i don't consider it as a disorder :) my 2 cents..

Well, my experience of people with extensive tatoos, big holes in their ears, etc, is that they have at one point in life taken illicit drugs, and have disdain for authority,

lol... can i have the second option when i got admitted on a hospital ;) hehe kiddin tampagirl :)

What would you consider professional the nurse with the 4g plugs in his ear (abour the size of a pen cap) or the nurse with the too long acrylic nails painted a day glow color and the huge hoops that just scream to patients rip me out.

I'm going to school for nursing and my ears are at 5/8th. I wanted to go to an inch but i figured that would be a problem with getting a job (so i guess I'll have to save that for when I'm 80!). I figure I can just put smaller plugs in for work. I hope that doesn't cause a problem.

But I really don't understand how people can judge you based on how you look. It's ridiculous

Rightly or wrongly, we all make judgements about each other based upon how we look. How we choose to dress and what we put on our bodies matters because it telegraphs quite a bit.

How is it ridiculous? It would be inappropriate to judge people based on appearance issues that they cannot control (race, height, and so forth) but when someone intentionally chooses to look "weird" it definitely does send a strong message. The gaping ear lobe holes make me want to vomit. I mean that literally--every time I see one I get nauseated. While I respect the rights of such folks to express themselves as they wish, I would prefer to have someone that exhibits an air of sound judgment and professionalism care for me than someone that flamboyantly proclaims "individuality" by doing what scores of thousands of other "individuals" are doing.

If you don't expect people to judge you based upon your image why do you go to the hassle of cramming some huge objects in your ears, putting makeup on, styling your hair a certain way, or wearing certain styles of clothing? You seem to want to convey a certain message to certain people without accepting that by doing so you also send a negative message to the rest of the world.

While someone like me that is disgusted by your choice of ear-hardware might overlook your appearance after getting to know you (which I likely would), it is VERY difficult for people you're meeting briefly at work (e.g. patients) to take the time to shift from a negative initial impression. It's up to you and your potential administration to determine what you'll do, but it's important that you realize the implications of your decision to make yourself appear well outside the mainstream. For what it's worth, I would apply the same argument to artificial/long finger nails (along with the infection control issues there, of course), wildly colored hair, and other visible piercings.

I wouldn't have an issue with you being my nurse, however, many patients would. People are uncomfortable with the unfamiliar, and they may fear if you buck society's norms, you may not follow the rules.

I work NJ, I think this area is pretty progressive, that being said, in my facility, tattoos must be covered in our ER, I have never seen a nurse with facial jewelry, or EMO makeup. We do have a secretary who is EMO and a great worker, yet so many cannot get past his appearance. It's a shame, one of him is worth 5 of the others.

I have two kids in college, so I am not so young....I still believe in doing your own thing....sometimes that just needs to be on your own time. That is unless you own your own business. Good luck either way...Happy hunting!

this is an old thread. the op is undoubtly now practicing somewhere. hopefully w/o the tunnel earrings. i'll admit it. i want a professional, neat appearing person taking care of me. call me a snob, call me an old foggy. i can take it. :nurse:

Do you use this atrocious slang and bad grammar when charting?

Rather see the nurses with the tunnel earrings IN rather than OUT to be honest! I'm not bothered by any of that stuff I guess. As long as people act professional, I could care less what kind of hardware or tats they're sporting. Most people will have a different opinion, though!
