I'm guessing you're very young.

Thankfully, I have not seen this. And honestly, I'd be rather shocked to see a nurse employed in any facilities that I am aware of, sporting such a look. Hiring practices pretty much keep a certain professional standard in place; nurse managers keep the already-hired in check as well, if their choices of clothing, jewelry or grooming were to become a professional distraction or healthcare concern.

You may become a nurse with that look, but you can also expect that (depending on your geographic area, perhaps, or choice of facility) that you might well be an unemployed (or unemployable) nurse.

Haven't read through the rather lengthy pile of pages, but I'm going to hazard a guess that mine isn't the only post along these lines.

I've never seen tunneled earrings before, but I can tell you that if you worked at my hospital, you are evaluated once a year and one of the questions has to do with professional appearance.

It might all be in the eye of the beholder, but if the beholder is the one who's passing out your yearly pay raise, you'd be wise to make such a simple accommodation to the mainstream and look like they want you to look.

PS If I was just coming out of anesthesia and saw someone coming at me with funky ear things and tattoos all over the place, I'd probably jump out of my skin. You're talking about a profession that's so ritualistic and traditional that we're still debating the "whites" issue, for pete's sake. ;)

haha what i meant was regular tunnel ears not the lighter thing :p is that prohibited on hospitals?just curious :)

We have a dress code regarding jewellery. One pair of plain stud earrings, one wedding ring. Nothing else at all.

I live in the middle of the friggen bible belt, and you would not have a problem getting a job at our hospital. No policy re: tunnel vs stud earrings, no policy re: tattoos covered, no policy re: funky colored hair. My hair at one time was bright pink, a coworker's was flaming orange. My tattoo often shows, we have many empolyees with visible tattoos; not a problem.

Actually, I find it breaks the ice-LOLs often asked me "Is that your natural hair color?" to tease me,to which I would respond, "No, is that YOUR natural hair color?!" and it would crack them up. Old WWII and viet nam vets would compare tattoos with me. It was fun to have something in common with them.

We actually are only supposed to wear one set of small ear jewelery; but I'd like to see them try to pry the costume jewelery out of the ears of most of the docs around here. If they can't enforce it on the docs, they aren't going to do it to the peons, either.

I would think they would be a safety hazard. An agitated or confused patient could rip them out. I think any excessive piercings or tattos are unprofessional and don't belong in a hospital. Outside of work - whatever floats your boat. That's my opinion.

Yes, I think all hoop earrings are a safety hazard or piercings in odd places (like the cheek, lip, etc).

If a patient rips it out..I also don't think the hospital should be liable for paying the medical bill either...wearing that stuff is a choice.

Here is the bottom line for me. Nursing is a profession, and people should come to work looking professional. The sort of dress the OP suggested is NOT professional. And if I were a patient I'd request a different nurse- because if my nurse can't even use decent judgment on what looks professional, whats to say he/she will use good nursing judgment.

Outside of work wear what ever you want, but when you come to work, look the part.

Hello all, first post ever. Yay. :)

I think what a person said earlier about nursing being a profession will always hold true.

Little old me; full back tattoo, gauge 2 ears and a lip ring. But that is in my day to day life. In the hospital the lip ring comes out, I have since let my ears go back down to 8 gauge and no one will ever know about my ink.

Even though I am a full fledge card carrying member of that particular subculture,i don't actually think it has a place in any profession. Just as I may take a lawyer less seriously that has a "job stopper" tattoo (aka a tattoo on the face/arms-) I don't think I would take a nurse as seriously either.

Just my little humble opinion.

you are wise beyond your tender years!! i used to give my parents the "no one should judge me by my looks" speech, back when it was the braless, granny glasses and bellbottoms look! didn't fly then, nor now.

we all make judgements at a glance, even if some are later disproved. we all have our friends, quirks, and personal beliefs...but work in general is not the place to flaunt it, nursing in particular.

to paraphrse a routine of comic chris rock "if you don't want to be mistaken for a hooker, don't wear a hooker's "uniform".

I'm going to school for nursing and my ears are at 5/8th. I wanted to go to an inch but i figured that would be a problem with getting a job (so i guess I'll have to save that for when I'm 80!). I figure I can just put smaller plugs in for work. I hope that doesn't cause a problem.

But I really don't understand how people can judge you based on how you look. It's ridiculous

hopefully you'll not getting trouble getting a job cause i got one :) and some on this thread got one too ;)
