peace...
I'm guessing you're very young.
i'm 28 mam married and with 3 Very beautiful, sweet and loving daughters and if thats young for you its a compliment for me:)
yes i know mam and i'm ready to face these consequences for me and yes you're not the only one with your lines on this threadYou may become a nurse with that look, but you can also expect that (depending on your geographic area, perhaps, or choice of facility) that you might well be an unemployed (or unemployable) nurse.Haven't read through the rather lengthy pile of pages, but I'm going to hazard a guess that mine isn't the only post along these lines.
ewww yeah its scary ears riped off by a patient having hallucinations of aliens with floppy earlobesI would think they would be a safety hazard. An agitated or confused patient could rip them out. I think any excessive piercings or tattos are unprofessional and don't belong in a hospital. Outside of work - whatever floats your boat. That's my opinion.
respect the opinion... but isnt it harsh/discriminating for people with tattoos NOT to belong in hospitals? i've seen and met lots of hospital staff w/ tattoos even guys with earings on duty if you want proof try checking at Arrowhead Hospital in Colton, Ca :)
When I was 36, I gave myself a birthday gift, a nose ring. A simple gold stud. Back then, It wasn't common like it is today.
The DON came marching down to the ER (good news travels fast) and lectured me about the nose ring not being professional. I explained that this nose stud in no way affected my ability to do my job and I wasn't taking it out. She said, "If I receive even one complaint, you're going to have to remove it" I said "We'll see"
I got a lot of compliments on it, especially from - get this - the elderly.
After about 6 months, the DON came down and said she had received a complaint about my nose stud. I said "Come on, one complaint in six months and your hassling me!" I said "We have nurses here who get weekly complaints on their personality and your not hassling them!" She walked away, and I've had it ever since.
I'm now 46, I look and behave professionally with my nose stud.
Times are changing, today's youth will one day be our doctors and nurses, I believe "non-traditional" piercings will become more and more commonplace and acceptable over time.
One of the best ICU nurses we have, has her eyebrow pierced, tongue, nose and lip. She is smart as a whip, compassionate and works hard. Never judge a book by it's cover.
I'm a nursing student currently doing clinicals on med/surg. My ears are stretched to 00 but I only wear solid plugs during clinicals. You can not see a large hole through my ear. I have two large tattoos on my biceps that are covered by my sleeves that extend to the elbow. I still look very profesional, and most of all I act profesional. No one has said anything about my appearance. I do my best at providing wholistic care, and to me that is my most important characteristic. Just try not to make your body mods a big deal in the workplace.
I would have to say that probably over half of the people in my pre-req classes that are applying to NS for next fall have piercings and "emo" style hair. Sorry but that is the norm now. That is no longer dressing "weird" or "strange", since weird and strange would be outside the norm.
I myself have tatoos but they are on my upper arms and can be hidden if I want them to be. Luckily, I have never felt the need to hide them.
And I live in Texas, a place where one would think these things are not accepted. If the hosptials in this area weren't hiring people who have this look then they would be faced with a small new hire pool.
I got my tatoos around 8 years ago and I used to have lots of piercings. I no longer have my tongue, nose, or eyebrow pierce and back when I got them it was not in the norm but I am glad to see that some people are becoming more open minded.
I know it was a huge shock and many were offended when women started to wear pants. Same thing when people started to wear jeans to work (which now is very common on Fridays). Times are always a changin'! And either you accept the change or sit around gripping and sounding like an old fart! But that is just my opinion.
I was highly offended by the post that insinuated that tatooed people are drug addicts or users. I do not use drugs and that is a very offensive statement. But that just goes to show how the conservative mindset is in our country. People need to grow up and realize that the world does not revolve around them. I know, some of you are just stating your opinion but when you insist that someone not work because of a tatoo or piercing that is infliciting your opinion on my life and that is more than stating your opinion.
I'm jumping in late, but here's a bit about me. My ears are 1/2" and yes I wear tunnels most of the time. I work in a hospital and none of the higher ups have ever said anything. I also have . . . let's see- 11 big tattoos- none visible in t-shirt and jeans. Also have eyebrow, nose, labret, belly button, and nipples pierced. Do I wear them everyday. . . no I don't. Am I worried about getting a job with them? No, everything except the gauges can easily be taken out without upsetting me. (I've had them soo long they are healed) It's not a "fashion" trend for me it's a way of life; My hubby tattos and pierces.

Yeah, you are right. You can't ever judge a book by it's cover. I don't have any piercings, but I do have some tattoos that can be covered with quarter length shirts. I'm not a drug user, and I am also a Christian. So it is not fair for someone to be quick to judge. 9 times out of 10 people will get it wrong, so it is best not to form a quick opinion about anyone.
