I am in shock, utter shock. I can't seem to accept this news. But at the same time I'll always be grateful to Brian for creating a community that has been such an integral part of my career. Since 2009, from the moment I started my first prereq to the present day as an experienced nurse. The least we can do to honor him is to continue supporting his legacy. Rest in peace ... 🌾

Yesterday I was teaching basal/prandial/correction blood sugar management to 35 Versant residents. I had them break into small groups and do presentations: a skit, a Hangman quiz, a rap song. Lots of laughter and learning.

Halfway through I picked up my phone and saw the news. I really couldn't process it. I had to finish my class- it was very hard.

I only met Brian once.

It was last spring at NTI in San Diego. He was quiet, self-effacing, well-mannered, generous. We had dinner with about 10 of his staff members. I could see he respected his staff, and it was mutual. I observed that his staff was free to brainstorm and share opinions, which told me a lot about Brian. Definitely not a big-ego person, more of a background guy.

He didn't like fish, and didn't know how to order from a Mexican seafood menu, so I told him we couldn't be friends.

I had always had this dream of being an advice columnist (I grew up with Dear Abby and Erma Bombeck). Brian gave me an opportunity to do that, plus some cool yellow, allnurses sunglasses :) I started writing an advice column for allnurses.com, but I told Brian my primary interest would always be my own blog I was a fairly new blogger and wanted to grow my own blog.

So about once a month, I would email Brian and say "hey, would you share the love and post one of my articles (from MY blog, nursecode.com) on your allnurses Fb page?" He always did, and within hours. A couple of times, he surprised me, picked one of my articles and promoted it without telling me. How did I know? One day I received 29,574 views on my blog in one day! It's never happened to me before or since then.

Thank you, Brian, and RIP. I'm so glad I got to meet you. My heart goes out to all fellow human beings who suffer, sometimes alone and unknown.

My deepest condolences to all staff, especially Mary, who has been a friend to me, friends and extended family of Brian and Karen Short.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Dialysis.

I am so sorry. What tragic news. AllNurses has been and will continue to be a great resource as well as a place I have made many internet friends. You all feel like a second family.

So sorry for those of you that worked closely with Brian and knew him and his family. Thank you for your continued dedication to his vision in this difficult time.

Nursing has lost a beautiful family. My heart hurts. Prayers for the family. There is a saying "While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil."

So while we say goodbye others are welcoming them on the other side. May peace be with them always.

I've mostly lurked, but haven't logged on in years. I found out about Brian and his family's passing via people.com. It's being reported as a murder/suicide. I don't know what happened, or who did what. But, this community has kept myself and many others sane through our nursing journey. For that, I just want to say thank you Brian. May you and your family rest in paradise.

RIP and thank you for creating such a wonderful community. Is thanks to this website that I decided to go into nursing and will be forever grateful for it.

I didn't know him, but my heart is so heavy right now!! Because of AllNurses, I'm pursuing my BSN. I used to stalk this site day in and day out and read all kinds of information before I became a member, b/c I was so unsure of becoming an RN at first. Then when I joined, the community was very welcoming. Because of this man's vision, I was able to choose my career path with confidence. I'm forever grateful for that and his family will be in my prayers.
