Did anybody else have a SUPER boring history teacher? He talks non stop for 1 hour and 10 mins :: he doesn't post powerpoints or have a school webpage so you have to audio record him. He rabbit trails. He was talking about what america is and then started telling us the history of pizza and tomatoes (?). This is going to be a long semester.
Troll:One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument
Based on the reaction of the OP, my assessment is accurate.
Wrong again dear. Internet trolls do not contribute to forums for five years. Not forums that are heavily moderated like AN anyway. Like yourself, they are usually new to the forum, and because they post against the TOS, their posts are usually removed by the moderators, they are eventually banned in pretty short order, and they do not have a high degree of "likes" from the membership. Simply posting something that someone didn't like does not elevate one to the degree of troll.
Of course, crying troll every time one doesn't like what one reads can also get a poster in trouble. We have pretty good mods here, so actual trolls don't last long.
My advice was actually not bad. When a person feels bored doing a required activity, it only hurts themselves to wallow in their ennui. Interesting people will look for the good they can glean in a situation or will be resourceful enough to find some way to stimulate themselves in spite of the situation. If the lecture is truly worthless (doubtful), she could mentally make her grocery list, mentally drill herself on dates and other factual material, take a nap with her eyes open, you know the drill.
This is good practice for life as well. We know that life is full of tedious tasks that we must attend to regardless of the fact that they are not exciting or particularly interesting. Nursing has more than a few of these.
This post is not a troll post. It's just a young student complaining about a professor and the lack of Sesame Street generation PowerPoint presentation materials.
I, as an older woman, from the era of the black and white TV, thinks her generation is a bunch of pampered weakings. But, that doesn't make her a troll.

He was calling Horseshoe the troll, not KT. Neither is. KT was venting, that's all. Anyway. It turned into a kind of fun thread... Right?!
This just made me think of: when I was a kid and complained I was bored my mom handed me a mop. I started doing the same thing with my kids. They know better, now!

Says the new member who flounced when given sound advice about not misrepresenting his credentials? Hmmm....

I am from the Sesame Street generation. However, I am getting old. We didn't have cell phones, or power point. I also remember the Dewey decimal system and DOS (Disk Operating System).
I also remember history class in October 1987, sitting there on "Black Monday" in class learning that the stock market had just crashed.
Except for that particular day, I found my history prof boring too.

I agree. I was wondering though if you or anyone else has suggestions for dealing with professors that have those drone like voices that make your brain waves go flat?
To the OP----
I'm a visual and experiential learner and mainstream education for me in the 70-80's was torture. As an adult I took up aka bucked the system and started knitting during lectures, religious services etc. It really bothers some lecturers but it's a godsend for me because with my hands doing something repetitious my brain can listen to even the most monotone of speakers and stay awake. :)
You can also do inconspicuous things like mold beeswax modeling wax (available in natural education supplies, I'm most familiar with Stockmar brand-we use it in theraputic settings in alternative education settings), or do zen doodling, or like me forms of low key handwork-knitting/crochet. For me personally I have to do something that I can keep my eyes on the speaker. Eyes and ears on speaker/hands busy....so note taking doesn't work for me.
It's a good idea to ask a professor if they would mind if you did handwork (they won't see the modeling wax-if you tried that) and just explain that it makes you a more attentive listener. Forget the part about them being monotone. Usually they won't mind if you ask and promise to sit in the very back or front so you don't distract anyone. :)

Did anybody ever hear from OrganizedChaos again? Hearing about the bar made me think of flounce bingo.
