bored to tears

Did anybody else have a SUPER boring history teacher? He talks non stop for 1 hour and 10 mins ::sleep:: he doesn't post powerpoints or have a school webpage so you have to audio record him. He rabbit trails. He was talking about what america is and then started telling us the history of pizza and tomatoes (?). This is going to be a long semester.

This just made me think of: when I was a kid and complained I was bored my mom handed me a mop. I started doing the same thing with my kids. They know better, now!

Yeah....my kids would never utter the words "I'm bored" to me. Whenever they've dared I've said "oh good I have jobs for you". They quickly get unbored and disappear. :D

That normally got me or my sister dish duty or vacuuming the floor

Whining "I'm bored" to my mother bought me a one-way ticket out of the house for the day. As in, "Go outside and play! Be home for dinner."

OP, do you *have* to go to class? Does your prof take attendance and is it part of your final grade? If not, as an adult learner, I would be willing to bet you can find a better use of your time. If you must be there, then as others have suggested, you can get other things accomplished while in class. Just be discreet.

Yep. Gotta be there. I notice I mentally drift off & write to do lists, what I need from the bookstore, etc.

They way some people conduct themselves in these discussion forums is unacceptable. PROFESSIONALISM is a very important aspect of nursing and those making rude, condescending comments should be reminded of this.

The question the OP is asking is relevant to nursing because she is probably in nursing school where one of the requirements for her degree is to take a history class. Since this topic is under "students", it is relevant and there is nothing wrong with her asking for advice on this class. Isn't that what allnurses.com is for? Asking for advice and feedback and discussing topics concerning nurses and students? Someone please let me know if I am mistaken.

OP - have you tried looking up videos on YouTube? If I am studying something that is boring, I sometimes look for You Tube videos related to the content in class and it helps give a fresh perspective on the material. I feel for you though. There is nothing worse than a boring history teacher. Also, there are a lot of rude members here. Just remember, it's easy to be a nasty person from behind a computer screen. Just tell yourself, that is NOT the kind of nurse I want to be, and model yourself after professional, compassionate nurses. There are still some out there, but I think many nurses are losing site of the reasons they entered this profession. Always remember what drove you to nursing, and never lose your passion for it!

Thank you. I haven't looked at youtube yet since. He really has no direction it seems. Somebody will ask a question and he says "I'm telling a story" . Maybe soon it will get more focused.

I was relistening to his lecture and I was just venting. I've seen alot of venting threads and thats why I was surprised by the reaction but oh well. I was just curious how everybody elses experience was.

Thanks for the response and I didn't let it get to me. :)

The OP posted this in the General Nursing forum. That is why several people asked her what it had to do with nursing. Since it WAS off topic, it was moved to the student forum.

This is a troll - don't worry they go away when you don't feed them.

I wasn't interested in my history classes and so they were tedious. I was VERY interested in some of my other classes, but the format caused my attention to drift more than I would like because I'm a visual learner.

Perhaps that is your disconnect too - the instructor obviously can't cater the entire lesson to your learning style, but explain your problem to them in a respectful way. If you show them you care about coming to class then they're far more likely to help you and possibly give examples in a different way than if you're a wallflower.

LOL! Joined AN in 2016 and already labeling longstanding members as trolls. Way to go.

Please don't chide. I'm friendly with KT and Horseshoe, they are both nice people, and you finger waggers are blowing this up. There was a small exchange, but then it turned into a good conversation.

Let it go. Thanks.

KT, your class reminds me of a Sociology course I took my freshman year of college (first degree). We had a textbook but our professor spent each lecture focused on a specific sociological events and subjects - a few different cults, FGM (ouch!) and such. I actually found the lectures quite interesting - more so than reading the textbook.

I had a History teacher who used to make all the big boobed girls sit up front and center and then try to look down our shirts.

Sneaky thing, he had a glass eye so we were never quite sure of what he was looking at.

Ah, memories of Freshman Philosophy class (went to a Catholic University, had to take 6 hours of Philosophy AND 6 hours of Religion-40 years later, I'm still scarred lol).

Most of it was as exciting as watching paint dry, but I did well (I was VERY good at writing BS papers [emoji56]). The only thing I took away from the class was the memory of the girl who kept trying to impress by talking about "pseudo sophisticated people", except she kept pronouncing it "swaydo".

None of us ever bothered to correct her. We considered it performance art.
