What Baffles You?

So I have come across this a few times. I am holding a straw to a persons lips and they drink and drink and drink and pretty soon they are waving their hands for me to stop. Stop what?! You don't have to keep sucking on the straw just because it is in your mouth. I think the universal sign of I'm done please remove the straw should be to stop sucking on it and open your mouth! I have had a few people have to catch their breath and make comments about me giving them too much! What? I don't get it.

Why do people have to make vocal sounds when they yawn?

Maybe for the same reason we grunt when we stand up? ;)

Patients that fart when I get them up. Um, thanks.

Except when they are 90 y/o men who say "blastoff" and start laughing. I Let that go,lol.

I had a pt who was ambulatory and walked to the kitchen, while "cropdusting". Really????

Honestly? I am baffled that a nurse would blame another nurse for not wanting to work overtime at an exhausting, understaffed job. I am baffled that employers keep such a skeleton crew that one or two people being unable to come in means the difference between a safe and an unsafe work environment. Don't blame the nurses. Blame the management. I was hired for 36 hours per week. What I do with the rest of them are nobody else's business. I am baffled that anyone would have the nerve to imply I am somehow obligated to spend my time off at work.

A million times this.

Again I wasn't blaming the nurse who didn't come it. It just baffles me why they feel that they have the right to be upset when no one will come in to help them out if there is a call off/ sudden surge in census when they are not willing to do it either.

Slapping a band-aid on poor staffing problems by calling people who are trying to balance their work life and home life by enjoying their entitled days off is a very valid reason to be angry. Management of units with chronic staffing issues (not just the once in a blue moon holy crap there's an epidemic of the crud running through the unit staff issue) need to find the reason for the issue and solve it. Constant calls to work on days off is only going to increase staff dissatisfaction, burnout, and staff resignation, leading to further short staffing problems. It's a vicious cycle that needs to be fixed.

The bp thing has reminded me of several times that I've had family members question why we don't have certain equipment that doesn't even exist. Like "oh you don't have the oral thermometer that takes their bp at the same time??? I thought everyone has those now."

Sometimes I just stare at them like, "what????"

Where do they get this stuff?

Or maybe, just maybe, they're referring to the electronic BP cuff that has the thermometer built in? Where they'll take your temp orally while the cuff is checking your BP? ;)

I have spine fractures and usually I grunt while I stand up because I've learned to anticipate pain and subconsciously hold my breath knowing it's coming. Then I let it out in a grunt, but really it's a sigh of relief because I expect it to be worse than it is.

My husband hums Christmas songs as he yawns. He will also whistle when I'm on the phone with him...

He's lucky he has some other really great attributes such as doing dishes and laundry!

Drives me crazy!

People who got admitted because they didn't take their "water pill" for a week questioning me during med pass: "I don't think I ever took this pill, are you sure I'm supposed to take it?"
