Happens every time I work nights! One memorable Prince demanded to be kept overnight for a procedure that everyone else went home from. He was warned that he'd be checked on during the night. Heard he pitched an all mighty fit at midnight and 0400. "I'm sick and need my rest".

My response would have been something like "You chose to stay overnight after your procedure. You could have went home and we wouldn't be waking you then." I would have said this as a gentle reminder of course

Word. I had a patient the other day who "couldn't afford" his psych or GERD meds. Finally got admitted and during my assessment I noticed that he had 2 sleeves of beautiful tattoos on his arms and his legs. He also had an interesting tongue "modification". He sure could afford those items. Makes me crazy.[/quote']To be fair, you never know about people's tattoos. They could have been acquired long before he started having trouble paying for meds. Years ago I was on good stamps, and I happened to have several visible tattoos that I got a few years prior to having to go on assistance...PLUS I bartered for them by doing free babysitting nor he tattoo artist and his wife! But lo and behold...there were many a grocery store clerk who took my food stamps card, saw I had ink, and made snide comments about how I could afford tattoos but not food for my kids.Don't assume things, people.

While that is true, on our unit we have to log in every tattoo that someone has every admission during our body search. I usually know which ones are the new ones. And I hear them talking with patients about how much so and so charged for this one ( or I flat out ask them since I am thinking about getting another one similar is size and placement)

How come I can be trusted to pull all kinds of drugs, including narcotics...
But I cannot have keys to central supply to get more briefs or Foley kits?

The black market for incontinence products is insane, didn't you know?
Sometimes I think it might be considering the commercials for the cath kits!

Patients who claim they want to go home but refuse to be independent.
patients who complain about their IV site but refuse to a new IV start
The patient who is doing well post op. Pain controlled with oral meds, doing their IS etc. Visitors arrive and suddenly they need IV pain meds, they can't pick up their own cup, nausea sets in and they just put on a big show.

YES! to all of these. Especially the IV start one. If my IV site was burning, I think I'd rather deal with another needle stick than constant pain!

This is a great thread. I'm so glad I'm not the only one suffering these patients. The patients who are totally capable that needs butt wiping all of the sudden really baffles me. Patients who asks for massage surprises me and I still don't know how to graciously refuse that task. I oblique sometimes to those with legitimate pain and no family but others I feel are just abusing me.
