What's your "busy season?"

I note that in psych, our number pick up when the weather is cruddy - both because our addicted patients may not be able to get into the shelter and because we see more depression.

Working at the college clinic, we see tons of activity during flu season and just before and after spring break, right before finals, and about two weeks after school starts. Lots of injuries as soon as the weather turns nice.

What's your specialty, and do you have times of the year when you know it will be more hectic at your workplace?

CCU/ICU, now is the "down time" acutually did not have one vented patient last night!!!!!

November is PURE HELL, through february. Peak summer, live down south, gets all your CHF'ers and end stage hearts an admission. June will start to get bad as all your undiagnosed cardiac patients try to loose weight or become more active, in scorching heat..... GEEZE!

Enjoying the lul, but I'm signed up for call on Friday the 13th. Add in friday night knife and gun club..... I should add that ANY friday with warm weather is a true bugger!!!

hey, worked geriatric psyc. firm believer in the moon's effect on people.... still see it here in the hospital, not just patients, staff gets cranky too!!!!! please add that to my list.

ER....every season is our busy season. Our numbers are consistent. I think we generaly have more "injuries" in the nicer weather. Obviously with flu season you get more fever/flu. And then of course their is the snow storms that produce the broken hips and MI's.

seems now in OB, where I work. we have been busy-----------who knows it cycles. Some days, nothing happening then WHAM----the bus fulla labor patients hits the door and we are running. That is the nature of OB.

We have a definate jump in census here in the winter because we have a lot of snowbird residents who live here during the winter months from Canada and the eastern half of the northern US.

It is a little slow here now, with a drop in census, new grads starting in ICU we are getting cancelled more.

Winter is our asthma season in Oz - we used to blame the Wattle (mimosa) but that theory has been debunked (at the moment).

Winter of course is our colds and flu season.

When I was up north early spring was the time for snake bite and envenomation and around Christmas we would get the MI patients who "thought" they would mow the lawn in 40 degree heat midday Christmas eve.

Full moon = overdoses of course.

I agree with ernurse728!!!!!!!! Every season is our busy season in the ER. Just different types of busy.

Spring - allergies, weekend athlete injuries, prom and drinking and driving

Summer - injuries, trauma, drownings, etc

Fall - sports injuries

Winter - flu season

Each season brings its own mad rush to the ER!!!!!!!

Holidays...

Or should I say the days after a holiday...

Diabetics ate too much sweets

CHF'ers ate the ham

MI's from the stress of the holiday and stuffing their gut

Everyone else who had to wait until after the holiday to get treated for something that would have been easy to fix if they hadn't waited 3-4 days.

Like other southern nurses, I find none of the allergens die off in the winter here, so I can always count on some asthma/COPD'rs in crisis in my ICU year round.

With the Texas heat and Texas size appetites we have steady cardiacs too, so between the two I always get enough work...LOL!
