- What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?

Patients who steal from the ER
i thought it was only our goofy linen room that was saying that we are using to many sheets. they actually had the nerve to say that we were " inappropriately using our linen supply" ....how can you inappropriately use sheets? :uhoh21:

Patients who steal from the ER
We actually have people come in off the street...and not necessarily homeless people...wait for the locked doors to open to get back into the ER and steal food from the dietary room!

TB skin test...a reaction??
I have been getting a reaction to my PPD for about 3 years now. It is very similar to what you describe. It is a large red mark at the site where the test was given. There is never any induration and the test is always read as negative. One person told me that it could be an allergic reaction.

Are you required to have NRP or at least PALS Certification?
In our ER we are required to have ACLS and NRP but not PALS. We are about to make it madatory for everyone to have PALS. The NRP is helpful to us as we do not have and L&D floor so we do all the emergency deliveries AKA: " I didn't know that I was pregnant" , " I don't know what hospital I am suppose to go to"

Anybody waiting for RSV or rotovirus results before sending a peds pt to the unit?
We always have to wait until we get the results of the RSV swab. Our peds unit houses 3 kids in a room...so we wait to get that back before sending them up so they can plan accordingly.

How many is too many
Okay...I am not and L&D nurse...I am and ER nurse...but this thread caught my eye. As a woman who has delivered 2 babies in the past three years I do not understand why people want every person that they have ever met in the room with them while they deliver! My husband said from minute one that if you weren't there when we conceived the baby you aren't coming in when they are born...I don't care how "natural" it is...it is still me buck naked from the waist down! And as a spectator why on earth would you want to see that! Just my opinion.

How Often Will I Be On My Feet As A Nurse?
LOL...I too laughed a little when I read the post. I am an ED nurse who works 12 hr shifts. I can safely say that I am on my feet for probably 11 of 12 hrs that I work. It is crazy busy all the time and you literally hit the ground running as soon as you walk through the door. If I actually did get to sit for a minute I would be worried that something awful was going to happen! The classic calm before the storm!

Drug Seekers- the Wrongfully Accused
Please don't take this the wrong way...but the problem with drug seekers in the ER is that they are taking up beds that are needed by real sick patients! And all we are doing is feeding into their behavior by giving drugs that they don't need. I am in an ER that sees 90,000 pt's a year. It is crazy, chaotic busy all the time. We have 3 hallway that we house up to 4 pt's in almost everyday. And I for one am tired of seeing the same people come in every other day for the same bogus complaint of a migraine. I for one feel that the doc's need to stand up to these patients and stop giving them narcotics so that they will stop coming in for the BS complaints. Now that being said I am a very big advocate of getting my patients pain under control the minute that they get into the room. I will hunt doc's down to get an order for pain meds for people that have flank pain and are probably a stone, people that really do have migraines etc. I am not a person that judges you just because you were here with a migraine 6 months ago. But I am sorry I do judge you if I know your name, hx, allergies and complaint the minute that you walk up to the desk and sign in. If I see you more than I see my family...that is a problem!

Pulseless patients: shock or drugs
Shock times three...then drug-shock-drug-shock! Always use electricity first!

12hr shifts and holidays
That is also one of the problems that we are having. We are now being forced to work 12 hr shifts on holidays...thanks to a new manager...and we also only get 8 hrs of holiday time back. Plus our holiday pay on christmas for example is 4pm Xmas eve - 4pm christmas day. So for me...who works 8am-8pm I am getting jipped my last 4 hrs of the shift! Not to mention the fact that I have 2 precious babies whom I would not see on Christmas day...the entire day! I just don't see how this is fair!

12hr shifts and holidays
This question is for the people who work 12 hr. shifts. What is your hospital/unit policy for holidays? Does your unit still make everyone work their 12 hr. shifts or is there some flexibility so that you are able to work shorter shifts so that everyone gets to spend time with their family?
