What do you want to do in nursing, how far do you want to go? I know personally I dream at night about my life as a bedside LPN, then (years later, after much education) as a midwife, etc. What do you dream about?
I want to be flying around in a chopper. I have been so passionate about trauma, life flight, and ER for the last 5 years or so. I am getting a good start right now. I am doing an externship this summer for 5 weeks on a trauma unit and 5 weeks in the Emergency Department of a huge teaching hospital. I am so excited! I also loved my pediatric rotation and am considering it after I am too old for the adreneline rush.
man, I just can't make up my mind...but areas that interest me now (today LOL!) are:peds, oncology, burn, ER, OR, L&D (obviously) Whew...I wish someone could tell me the pros and cons of each area to help me decide but I don't think I'll have a clearer view until I do my clinicals.
Have you visited the specialty forums? MAybe you'd get some insight there :) You've got plenty of time to figure it out!!! Good luck.

Ok, a slight change in plans. Perhaps I will get my LPN, work towards my RN and then BSN through Excelsior ("NY state" school, distance ed, great reviews, state fund eligible!). Meanwhile, I will get experience in geriatrics and critical care... then work agency! (Then go on to get my masters in midwifery, however, I met a VERY nice CRNA who sat down with me for about two hours and told me what a wonderful profession she has, and mentioned her six figure salary! :rotfl: ) So many dreams, I guess I have to follow God's plan.
