What did you do with your old nursing school textbooks?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

After almost 10 years, I am finally going back for my BSN. I still kept many of the nursing textbooks that were core books in my RN program. Of course now they are incredibly outdated! My question is-what have you done with your textbooks.? While I have referenced them from time to time, I am sure they are too outdated to use as resources for a current BSN program.

Specializes in LTC, assisted living, med-surg, psych.

I still have mine from the way-back days (1995-97). They are currently living in my storage unit. Another few years and they should be worth something as antiques. LOL

Specializes in OB.

I set them out on my stoop in NYC with a sticky note saying "free" on top, and eventually they disappeared.

Specializes in Cardiac PCU, ER.

I just graduated and I still want to hang on a few of them for reference points, but about ready to give mine to a local library.

I guess the consensus has me thinking I will pinch them. I don't know anyone around here who would want them for donations.

I might keep one or 2, just as memoirs and soon to be relics!

Specializes in Oncology, ID, Hepatology, Occy Health.

Some way back many years ago, I read a piece that nursing schools in poorly developed countries were DESPARATE for even old nsg/med references as they had NOTHING for their programs. I don't know if there would still be that kind of that need in today's world.

I'm sure that's still true today. When I qualified in 1986 there was a call put out in the nursing press (I was in the UK at the time) for a nursing school in Botswana and I sent my books there. It would be great if these things were more publicised as I'm sure there's still a need in many developing countries.

Specializes in retired LTC.

I remember it ripping my heart out to dispose of my old nsg magazines, esp the 10 yrs or so of AJN. And the NLN & APIC journals also.

Does anyone out here remember a nsg mag, Nursing 74, then it was Nursing 75, then Nursing 76, 77, 78 etc??? It had a yearly feature of various SONs' individual school pins. I liked looking at those pins. Wonder if new grads are that sentimental/proud of their school pins? Assuming schools still have them or did they go the way of the dodo bird like nsg caps?

Specializes in Critical care, tele, Medical-Surgical.
