11/21: What I've Learned, Thankful Thanksgiving Edition

Nurses General Nursing

Published

With Ixchel's gracious guidance, Here is this weeks What I Learned This Week. Since Thanksgiving is this week, I want to focus on being thankful for being nurses.

I am thankful that there was a nursing program in my hometown. This is what launched my nursing career. Amazingly, it was the only program I applied to, it never occurred to me to apply any where else. I am thankful that I was even accepted.

Also Thankful that my hometown had a hospital that hired me as a teenage LPN in Labor & Delivery working every Sat & Sun. That job allowed me to continue on for ADN, which led me to a much bigger city, Phoenix AZ. I am glad that although I was a new grad RN, I had a couple of years experience.I am very grateful that I was able to complete my BSN back when there really weren't any RN to BSN programs. I was fortunate to have served in the Navy Nurse Corps. And thankful that so far, have not had student loans. I am thankful to have 2 local universities that have DNP programs.

For those that will be away from your families on Thanksgiving Thursday, myself included, it really is an honor as nurses to be there for patients and patient's families.

What I learned this week: I learned that people of Asian heritage can have Alcohol Induced Red Man Syndrome.

I learned that all the fuss about ICD10 was just that, fuss. It really is making more sense every day.

What are you thankful for this week?

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

• I am thankful for online nursing education.

• I am thankful that, due to brave predecessors who blazed trails and suffered humiliations/injuries/deaths during the Civil Rights movement, I have the opportunity to further my education.

• I am thankful that I am not limited to an under-the-table existence as a domestic worker; my maternal grandmother raised seven children as a single mother and a low-wage domestic.

• I am thankful that this morning seems to be off to a nice start. :)

Specializes in LTC.

I am thankful that I have a job I like most of the time. I am really thankful that said job is less than 2 miles from my house. I really appreciated that distance while driving to work in the recent snow storm that dumped over 1 ft of snow.

I am thankful for the DON and ADON at my job, they are remarkable managers.

I am thankful for being in relatively good health and having the energy to work full time and go to school.

I am thankful for Allnurses.

This week I have learned that I can't please everyone and it is pointless to try. I have learned to work hard and do my best for the patients in my care. I'm thankful for the education and skills to care for those that need help. I'm thankful for the friends and my family that encouraged and supported me in becoming a nurse. I'm thankful for the amazing job I currently have and the kids I care for daily. This may not be the best job money wise I have held but the rewards are unbeatable.

Specializes in kids.

I am thankful for the education I received (a million years ago it seems) that has me in a great place career wise.

I am grateful for my family, especially my son!

I am grateful for my "tribe" and my "village"

I am thankful to AN for being able to vent when I'm not feeling so Thankful!!!!

Specializes in Med-surg, school nursing..

I am thankful for my school nurse job. I worked in the hospital setting for years and I can't even begin to describe the joy that THIS job brings me. It is far less money, but that's okay. I am home by 3:00, no weekends, no holidays, stress level is way less than the hospital. I have yet to wake up thinking "UGH, I hate this job!" And literally cry, which I did almost every day towards the end of my last job.

I am thankful for an amazing husband that goes above and beyond to make sure that his children (and his pregnant wife) are happy and cared for. He will never know just how thankful I am for him.

I worked at the hospital for a few hours last night floating and I saw one of our frequent flyers was admitted. Chronic drug user, judged by most. As I was walking down the hall I heard her and her boyfriend telling a visitor that I was the most amazing nurse they've met. My dad is an alcoholic and is no stranger to drugs, and the thing I dreaded most when I would take him to the hospital is that the staff wouldn't take him seriously. Even though this man NEVER complains until his is super sick. So I try to listen to my addict pts, some will manipulate as much as possible, but some just need compassion.

I am thankful for my nursing school friends that I am still in touch with. We held each other up the whole way.

I am thankful for my nurse friends over the years. I miss working with them ever single day.

I am thankful for the SN board here, Blue and all the laughs and support.

It has been a heavy week, from being under lockdown for 48 hours due to a "gun threat," to finding out it was a friend of mine with the gun, to finding out 5 days later that he had committed suicide before the school even went into lockdown. I am devastated.

I am thankful for my professors who offered up their homes when we were evacuated. There were 0 students left on campus after just a few hours.

I am thankful that I get to be home with my family for an extra 6 days, despite the circumstances.

That's about it right now.

I'm so sorry about your friend, but so glad he did not take out any kids.

So, so sorry for your week, Lulu Belle.

I'm liking your post out of support, not because of the content.

This week, I'm thankful for:

My safety and the safety of my loved ones. But when it is my time to go, I will not die wishing that I had more time.

Immunizations (although some may disagree).

Creation. I could spend hours wondering about the genetic makeup and complexity of seemingly simple creatures and still be mystified. Guess I'll have to settle with the knowledge that we will always be in wonder of something.

My health. Learning about all the things that can go wrong during pregnancy or birth, resulting in long-term disabilities, makes me thankful that I do not face any detrimental health issues at the moment.

Specializes in Hospice.

I'm thankful for the patience that Hospice has given me, because it kept me from going ballistic when I turned my phone on this morning to 6 emails from our on-call staff describing how a night nurse at the facility panicked Sunday, called 911, didn't listen to the family who told her "She's Hospice! Call them first!", didn't call us until the patient was on her way to the ER, resulting in possibly the family being responsible for the transport and ER charges (I think the facility should have to eat the bill, but that won't happen).

Fortunately the ER sent her back without doing much of anything, and she's fine.

I was actually able to tell the day shift nurse (who was more upset than I), "It's ok, mistakes happen. Maybe we just need to offer some more education to the staff" without even clenching my teeth.

The day nurse is going to add it to the 24 hour book "Hospice patient-ALWAYS call them first!!"

Specializes in LTC and Pediatrics.

I am thankful for a great job. Did I say I love my job, the staff and the residents? I do.

I am thankful for a good car to drive in snowy weather and then the subsequent snow packed and icy roads.

I am thankful for a few days off over thanksgiving with my family.

Specializes in long term care Alzheimers Patients.

I am thankful that I'm going to see my family and friends up North soon.

I'm thankful for my family down here.

Thankful that my per diem job will soon be full time.
