For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??
For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?
I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.
once i graduate, i would like to work in er or icu. eventually, i would like to be a crna. i do not ever want to work in peds. i am a teacher now and pretty burned out on children.

Pediatric oncology for me.
Im not sure I could handle that.I cry every time I watch the ST. Judes iNfomertial. However,I used to work with chronically, and terminally ill when I was a kid,it made me very sad even then. Now that Im older, sometimes I feel likeI would be good at it,if I could maintain my composure.,during the really trying times. On occasion I do miss working with the really sick babies.Im so ambivelent.
I would think working with sick babies would be sadder than working with older people who have lived a full life. Just my opinion!
Hi I am currently a CNA about to study LPN. I work in a nursing home; Yes I agree with you. It is sad to work with sick babies then elderly who have lived a long life and had a chance to see things. JMO too
For me the best are:Peds
NICU
OB
Worst are:
OR
Oncology
I'm the reverse... well, not OR. I couldn't do that. But oncology is my niche. Whenever I've worked in another specialty, I find myself missing it terribly and being drawn to the oncology patients we do admit. I can't imagine working peds/NICU/OB. Ick lol.
When I was a new grad, I was pulled repeatedly to our newborn nursery. We had 4 nurseries with 15 babies each and it would be me and a CNA manning one. They swaddled those kids so tight I couldn't see them breathing, so if they got too quiet, I would spend my night walking in a circle, tickling their little feet so they cried. My nursery was always in an uproar. The other nurses would come in and look at me like "what the hell???" but at least I knew my babies were alive and kickin'
I love looking through all these posts and seeing each individual's niche in the nurisng profession. That is what makes nursing so unique. You can do anything you want and have a great passion for it. I personally LOVE critical care, for me it's not about the dying and having such sick sick patients, but more so being there for the patients and families during a crisis and getting them through whatever challenges they must face. I originally went into ICU thinking i would be a CRNA NO WAY i love my pts i love bedside nursing, but I am making a change to peds for the sake of my back and a different look at critical care. I wish I could do geriatrics, but I have a hard time with the alzheimers and dementia disease processes, so that is probably an area that I will avoid.
The key is to know your strengths and weaknesses. I think alot of new grads are too hard on themselves and label themselves "failures" when they don't fit in right away on their first jobs. They might think they want a certain type of nursing, but it doesn't always work out to be the case. Give yourselves time to find your own niche...I love looking through all these posts and seeing each individual's niche in the nurisng profession. That is what makes nursing so unique. So far I've only worked on med-surg floors...I heard ICU is crazy and I don't think I would ever work there. I would like to try peds though...maybe in the future.
