For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??
For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?
I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.
i want to work in the ER at some point. i spent 2 days there in clinicals; the first day i got to be in the trauma bay. that was crazy, exciting; 4 MVA victims. i really enjoyed that, but the 2nd day i was in the other part of the ER (individual rooms). i saw people w/ chest pains, people who felt sick, but nothing like the trauma bay. so hopefully i can start in critical care, get some good experience and eventually go down to the ER.
I am a student, graduating in December '06, and as of right now my mind's set on PICU. I started out wanting NICU but when I visited a PICU for a day I realized that in PICU I will get more opportunity to learn and more variety since patients can range from newborns to 18 year olds (and sometimes older). I love working with children and their families.
GI = gastro-intestinal stomache intestines etc
for me its medical wards or Care of the eldlery in an acute setting or rehab, not nursing home until i get some experince
.
Both are considered heavy ares to work in the UK lots of total cares but you learn so much
Worst A&E (ER) just to stresful

Pediatric diabetes education...that's one I haven't seen here yet :)...I've been in the game too long (and far too inspired) to let it go, so that's what it is for me!
And maybe if I'm not hopelessly broke after graduating from school, I'll go back for my MSN...
I'm currently a NAP (nurse apprentice) on an oncology unit but I haven't decided yet where I'd like to specialize.
My plan is to establish a good basic foundation in med/surg nursing (minimum of 1 yr) and then move on to advanced life support and critical care (again, another 1 yr or so). Once I've gained experience in these two areas, I believe I'll be able to transition to most any speciality.
My daughter was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at 22 mos of age so I have many, many years experience in that arena. She is now 25 yrs old and in CHF (with implantable pacer/defib) after the birth of her daughter, so CCU is another option.
Of course, I may end up falling in love with oncology! I, myself, have experienced a bout with cancer (thyroid) and can offer honest emphathy with those undergoing radiation txs.
The world of nursing is at my feet.... I just need to decide where to step!
I think I would enjoy OB or ER nursing the best, but I would open to doing just about anything to start for the experience. I'm currently a unit secretary on a post-op/ortho floor of a small hospital. It's ok, but we're chronically understaffed and the nurses rarely have a chance to sit down for more than a minute at a time (if that!). We also have a general med/surg floor that I would NOT work on as a nurse. Sometimes I sign up for an extra shift there and it's awful. Though I think it's so bad because it's disorganized and they can't seem to keep a nurse manager for longer than a couple of months.
My ultimate plan it to become a CNM, but who knows if that will change? I could see myself really enjoying a level one trauma center (there's one at the hospital 20 minutes away) or catching babies. My mom is a paramedic and she LOVES the gory stuff. I think she may have rubbed off on me a bit. LOL Clinicals should help me be a little clearer on where I want to work (still doing pre-reqs now). ;-)

I want to work in the 'field' not a hospital. I mean work in for an Internartional Org. like Doctors Without Borders (Can't spell the French official name) that post medical staff to conflict areas and Projects like fighting AIDS in places like Congo, Darfur, Indonesia etc.
I guess I'll have to have Hospital EXP. That would be Probably LTC or Nursing home.
