For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??
For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?
I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.

When I finish school I would love to go into the ER or OB. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Well let me think..................OH HEMODIALYSIS
Reasons to be a hemodialysis nurse (chronic)
#1 You don't work Sundays.
#2 You don't work nights unless you want to and there is a noc program
#3 You don't work Christmas, T-day, or New Year's Day.
#4 You can be an expert
#5 You only have to deal with one doc. You get to know his ways.
#6 You are the eyes and ears for that doc. He trusts you and respects you.
#7 You can manage a group of patient.
#8 Excessive bonding with your patients. Wait that might be a con.
#9 Relatively new field. Lot's of opp.
#10 Growing patient population. You'll probably never get called off.
#11 Most of the big companies offer FIVE weeks vacation the FIRST YEAR.
#12 If I were younger I'd be an NP in this field.
Dialysis gets in your blood.
Because we work 6 days a week you can get a good schedule. Some of them are Thurs Fri Sat on. Off Sun then Mon, Tues, Wed on (all twelves) and then you have of THRUS FRI SAT SUN MON TUES AND WED.
7 days off every other week.. :biggringi

:balloons: Best place--OB-hands down! Why? Really, are people ever going to stop making babies? Ever? Our business is booming! And seeing a family greet their newborn is the greatest thing in the world... Sometimes it is also the worst place for obvious reasons, but I love it! For me the worst place was LTC, but that is just me. I did mostly administrative stuff so it was hard to feel like a nurse....

I have a list of possibilities that I realize may change once I've done clinical rotations. These are in no particular order:
I am almost certain that I do not want to work in geriatrics. I volunteer on a geriatric unit. I love those patients, but it is just so sad up there. Perhaps when I'm older I'll feel differently about it.
And once I have the master's (which is a looong way off right now):

I am graduating in August and i've had some experience in several diff. areas and IMO OB would be the WORST place to work...i cant even stand to listen to the lectures! BUT my real passion is pediatrics and possibly the NICU. I also know that id never work in LTC or hospice.

The place I am excited to work in right now is the Ortho/Neuro unit where I have been offered a position. The worst place I can think of is Psych, then Peds. Eventually, I would like to be a NP.

Upon graduation, I would like to work in the ER or PEDS. I want to get my Masters and eventually be DON somewhere. That is my goal.

The worst place (besides LTC) was a ped ER for me. Loved the kids, not the staff and parents so much though.
The best place is IV therapy. Work M-Fr no weekends, holidays or nights. I am the only one who does my job (job security). Can't complain. Great opportunity.
