For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??

For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?

I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.

Specializes in correctional, psych, ICU, CCU, ER.

Jail, definately, for me. Im 34 years of nursing, I've done home health, med surg, burn unit, ICU, CCU, ER, L&D, nursery, peds, ortho, psych, MD office, but the best if the jail. I don't have 20 other people looking over my shoulder questioning everything I do. My boss is 10 miles away at the health department. The Chief of Police calls only when he has a question, the officers are good to work with, because when they didn't have nurses here, THEY had to pour and pass meds, etc. The inmates, for the most part, are OK, because they know if they are out of control, they won't get their drugs, and they will be housed (by the jail staff) in a place they don't like.

The histories are beyond belief, there is ALWAYS something new. And the benefits are awesome. But, it's not for everybody. You have to be skeptical, and kindness is usually mistaken for weakness. (Also, you can't be afraid of cockraoches.)

JailRN:lol2:

Specializes in MSICU starting PICU.

oh my JailRN seeing that i look like i am 12 and am constantly told i am too nice, i suppose working in a corrections facility will not be for me. I start in the PICU monday so hopefully working with the kidders will be a good fit for me! I am amazed at all of your experiences, i worked in msicu for a year and am now trying picu and it seems that a lot of people look at me like i am crazy, can't tell you how many people have made sly remarks regarding changing areas of nursing, but that is the wonderful thing about nursing, you CAN change to different areas to truly find out what you love :-)

Specializes in Surgery - some medicine.

Best/worst place to work in - good question!

Well, I haven't quite decided yet because there are so many different areas one can go into, but I'm pretty sure acute care is more of a passion than chronic care for me. Depending on circumstances, I might start in chronic care, though, when I'm done next year. I've been offered a job there, which I could combine with acute care in the hospital. Somehow I'd like that combination - but we'll have to wait and see how it'll all turn out.

Specializes in I have an interest in Travel and OB/L&D.

I am someone who is considering nursing as a career. Once I go through nursing school, I would like to work in either OB/GYN/L&D or ER. I would like to work in OB/GYN/L&D because I would like to care for newborn babies and their mothers. I would like to work in ER because it seems like it will be a very fast pace busy environment and that's what I like!

Specializes in Occ health, Med/surg, ER.

I work in occ health and its great. All weekends and holidays off. Great benefits. I would have liked to go to ICU, but I have my whole career ahead of me...lol

well im not a student but I have to say the best nursing job I ever had was in corrections. You are given a set of protocols to work from and have a great deal of autonomy, but you have to be confident enough to be the only nurse in the facility at times.

I just started on pediatrics but I'd like to try mother/baby, possibly ICU, OR, and I'd really like to try something outside of the hospital, something outpatient or in an office. That's what I'd really like to do. I'm not a big fan of hospital nursing, but I want to get some hospital experience to get my nursing skills down. Kinda wish I would have tried to get on in some kind of outpatient or community setting though and just skipped the hospital altogether.

Med/surg, psych, neuro, and geriatrics would be places I'd never want to work. Also ER cause it scares me to death.

The only area of nursing I would not work is burn and oncology units. I will rather quit nursing that work with burn pt. Don't like peds much but I love children.

I am a new grad. I would love to work in dialysis. I live in Arizona. Can you tell me how to get into dialysis. Do they accept new grads? Is one company any better than another to work for? Is it a stressful environment? Thanks

Specializes in Ortho Rehab, LTC, Med-Surg, Telemetry.

When I first started school I swore I wanted to be a PEDS nurse, then I did my PEDS rotation. Ugh... Worst experience ever. I hated it. LOVE kids, hate PEDS.

My most favorite places to work are vastly different, but equally fascinating to me... L & D and Med Tele/CCU. Love those heart patients and birthing mommas!

Eventually I'd like to become a Certified Nurse Midwife, but that is subject to change if I get in "heart mode". That's the great thing about nursing... dozens of career options!

Funny, if I weren't in oncology, I'd want to work burns. And I'd quit before working peds lol.

I just graduated, and started in oncology--thinking my next job may be a nearby burn/trauma ICU.

It's funny how different we all are.
