For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??

For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?

I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.

I graduate in December, and am pretty set on working in the ED, and eventually in Trauma also, but my heart is in Emergency Nursing. :)

Specializes in Ortho Rehab, LTC, Med-Surg, Telemetry.
It's funny how different we all are.

I'm really thankful that we're all so different. I don't think it's said often enough, but I absolutely appreciate those nurses who do the job (happily and passionately) that I know I can't do.

I mean I was deadset on PEDs, then I got there and realized it wasn't for me. I was pretty disappointed about it, but I have to say... the PED's nurses totally understood and were awesome!!

I am currently working in mental health:yelclap: and can i say loving it. After that my choice would be surgical ward

Specializes in Corrections, neurology, dialysis.
I am a new grad. I would love to work in dialysis. I live in Arizona. Can you tell me how to get into dialysis. Do they accept new grads? Is one company any better than another to work for? Is it a stressful environment? Thanks

Yes, in dialysis they accept new grads.

To get started find a dialysis clinic in your area - the two biggest companies are Fresenius and Davita - and make an appointment to talk to the clinic manager. Fresenius has a six-week training program, four weeks of that in a classroom.

Be careful though. Dialysis is very specialized. Once you get there it's hard to do anything else. Lots of people worked med-surg a while before going into dialysis because there are lots of nursing skills that you will never use again once you are in dialysis.

OTOH it's a great area to be in. I hear people say you love or it hate. I don't love it or hate it. It's just okay. I wouldn't mind staying and wouldn't mind doing something else. *shrug*

Specializes in Med Surg/Ortho.

Not a nurse yet....but the areas I am interested are: the OR, forensics, I thought psych but now I am not sure, ER, and possible ICU or oncology. I would love to do bedside nursing for awhile (10 years maybe) then go on to community health, management, or teaching.

I would never work in LTC or anything to do with geriatrics, peds, L&D.

I have to say that dialysis sounds interesting....not just the hours, but what you do. I have heard of Fresnenius, they are hiring for a bunch of positions around here. Maybe I should try to get a job there doing something else and see what it is like while in school.

Specializes in Dialysis,Telemetry, ICU.

Do they pay you during the training period? I am going to talk to the clinic manager next week. He was talking about a 4 month training period. We plan to talk further during next week's meeting.

Yes, you will be paid during training.

One caveat - Fresenius gives free training, but if you resign before a year you have to pay them back for the training you received.

If you can hang in there, it's not a problem. If you find you really can't stand it and want to quit, the cost of the training could mean your entire paycheck.

Be prepared for a long learning curve. It takes a very long time to learn what you're doing, and you will feel like a failure every single day for months. Try not to let it get to you. It gets better.

Specializes in Management, Endocrine, ER, Corrections.

For a long time, I felt drawn towards hospice, but after doing clinicals in the OR that changed. I so want to be an OR Nurse!

However, I will put that desire on hold until I finish RN school. I'm going to seek employment in a doctor's office because I need family-friendly hours and time to study at night and on weekends.

Not exactly what I had "planned" on doing as I started out (just a few months ago I was dead-set on going straight into a hospital setting) but common sense has prevailed and this plan is better for me and mine.

Specializes in CCU.

Current situation: work in case management full time

PRN Medical Cardiac PCU

Graduate in May with my RN: Hope to work in CCU/CSICU or PICU.

I am sick of Med/surg, did it for 3 years. In my opinion a medical floor is the worse environment (depending on where you work, of course) I would not trade my time on the medical floor for anything. Developed great assessment skills, etc. However, never again! Nursing homes to me aren't that bad...I have supervised and worked the floor. I like it, laid back. You just have to knock the stress down a peg or two and realize it will get done when it does.:pumpiron:

Specializes in LTC/hospital, home health (VNA).

For me it's home health all the way! Every day is different - always going different places to see different people with different problems. You still get to use most of your skills ( IVs, catheters, phlebotomy, wounds) in fact if you like wounds you become a wound expert of sorts! The docs have a great deal of respect for us when we call them. You have flexibility and autonomy. My hours are M-F 8-4:30 with very minimal on-call. I am salaried - but where else can you plan your day to let your dog out to pee, swing by the pharmacy, keep a doctor appt, go out for lunch, etc and still see all of your patients and not have to use a PTO day! I truly find the fact that I can help a patient (whether it is wound care, IVs, or teaching about disease management) in the comfort of their own surroundings in a one-on-one basis without being pulled to 5 other things more rewarding than anything else I have experienced...my patients tell me they appreciate it too! I cannot imagine being anywhere else!!!!

Specializes in Mental Health.

I want to be a medical nurse..someday!!! I'm not too sure where my path will lead at this time, but I know for a fact that I need a BREAK from psyche.

Specializes in ICU.

I haven't done clinicals yet but for right now these would be my preferences:

OB, OR, ER, NICU...

I think I may be an adernaline junky, not sure how to tell exactly but the thought of working a regular floor does not appeal to me at all.
