Totally Off Topic: Thanksgiving Menu

I would love to hear what everyone is serving for their Thanksgiving meal, or making, or if you are going out to a restaurant instead (we have done this three times and it is awesome).

I am hosting just my sister this year, so there will be me, my husband, my sister and my two kids (9 and 11):

Turkey

Stuffing

Gravy

Mashed potatoes

Cranberry Sauce

Sweet potatoes/marshmallows (sister bringing)

Roasted brussles spprouts with shallots and bacon

Corn souffle

Crescent rolls

Peacn pie (sister bringing)

Chocolate silk pie

We always do bagels and lox for breakfast Thanksgiving morning. In our town, the HS football team plays the town next door at 10am. We always go to that game, then come home and eat around 1 or 2 PM. No appetizers or anything b/c we do it as a lunch. Then of course Turkey gobbler sandwiches for dinner that night :)

What do you do?

#1. Hugs to you Far and have a glass of wine for me please!

#2. We call it dressing. I have not "stuffed" the bird since the early 70's when I was cleaning a turkey and pulling out all the fat and remembering how all the nasty chemicals are stored in the fat and that drips into the stuffing… So, I just stuffed the cavity with celery, apples and onion for flavor and then discard. My usual dressing is made with half corn bread, half whole wheat cubes, sausage, apples, celery, mushrooms parsley, chicken broth and traditional sage spices. Hazel nuts also are a nice addition but some family don't like em so no more nuts :(

#3 We pot luck it at who ever has the largest cleanest house that particular year :)

It's me-hubs-kids and my mom this year.

Hubs and I are pretty strict Paleo and will be actually eating some forms of grain and dairy for the holiday, so I'm sure we will pay for it the next day. However, the few things that we'll be having are my granny's recipes and it's just NOT the holiday without them.

MENU:

Freshly harvested turkey

Granny's stuffing

Roasted sweet potato spears

Whole green beans

Rolls (for the kids, we can do without)

Polish mistakes (THE BEST THING EVER)

meat & cheese tray

fresh veg & hummus tray

fresh fruit tray

a Trader Joe's frozen apple tart and a pumpkin parfait with ginger snap crumbles for dessert

Polish Mistake?

roasted brussel sprouts

noodles

mashed potatoes

green bean casserole

sweet potato casserole

baked beans

fruit salad

cheese ball

rolls

veggie tray

texas chocolate cake

and I will be making cranberry pretzel crap:)

If I had my choice, it'd be a Perdue Over Stuffer Roaster instead of a turkey. Turkeys are OK but just so bland...

All the other fixin's with an Over Stuffer .... Now THAT's a meal!

Seasoned-

A Polish Mistake is the name given to recipes that my granny gave me over the years. There were several, with a funny story behind them. My grannie used to tell us about when she and her sister worked at a small hotel in Detroit in the late 1930s. While there they used to take note of the 'fancy food' that the kitchen churned out then try and recreate them at home. Many of the recipes turned out as what they called 'polish mistakes'. However, this one really WORKS.

This particular 'mistake' was a small piece of rye cocktail toast with some sort of meat/cheese on it. She re-worked it over the years and it's now toasted rye cocktail bread with a velveeta & chorizo mixture on it, with some onion and thyme mixed in. SUPER GOOD.

fyi- just to be clear this name was in no way decretory in nature, my grannie and her family immigrated from Poland in the 1920s and she would often make errors in her grammar, spelling, interpretation, etc. of various Americanized things, so she just called a lot of things her 'little Polish mistakes' to let us know that her version wasn't necessarily the original!

Since I will be working Thanksgiving Day this year (unless the census drops) we will be going out to dinner and a super little restaurant close to home. I will likely cook a turkey at some point though. I make homemade pumpkin pies from scratch, starting with an actual pumpkin so will probably do that over the weekend.

Mac and cheese for my vegetarian daughter

Birthday cake (my sister's birthday is the 27th)

and lots of wine.
