Too UGLY for Nursing?

Nurses Relations

Published

I listened to a testimonial in church whereby a relative of a patient told a nurse, "Sorry, you're too ugly to care for my grandmother." Another relative retorted, "I'm sorry, but you are too ugly to care for my grandmother." The nurse was hired on a private-duty, hospital basis left immediately and did not return. The congregation in the church laughed in response to hearing the story.

I did not and do not think it's funny. :nono:

What are some of your thoughts and feelings?

i've would have informed them that they can spend the rest of the day wiping their grannys big orifice.

My dad used to always say "Beauty is only skin deep, but UGLY goes all the way to the bone."

I agree with the others, I think the family members are the truly ugly ones for sure!

I feel bad for the nurse....and I wish nothing but a lump of coal for family members for xmas!

Let's hope they meant "acting ugly" rather than any other kind of definition of the word.

? What was the rest of the story? Were they truly talking about visual uglyness? Maybe the nurse wasn't kind...and they meant that she was ugly towards the grandmother?

If not....then I agree...the family can just wipe her talk.

The nurse wasn't the ugly one.

As people we should be able to see beyond the physical to see the beauty of the human being within....

You asked for thoughts and feelings, here are mine:

Thoughts: Wondering what on EARTH kind of church you're attending

Feeings: Repulsed and Offended

Since you used the word "church" I'm assuming -- perhaps wrongly -- that this is a Christian denomination. I seriously doubt Christ laughed at that little anecdote.

Just a hunch.

Are you going to talk to the pastor or priest about this? What are YOUR feelings about it?

Ugh... that reminds me of the time when I was a CNA and was told by a patient that I was "too fat to take care of him", he was a very unpleasant man.... It never ceases to amaze me how superficial and down right stupid our society can be.

this too, repulses me.

sounds more like the work of satan, nevermind a God-loving church member.

The moral(?) of the story was that all the relatives were so caring and endearing towards their grandmother to the point that no UGLY nurse was allowed take care of her.

How sad and unfortunate. :o

I hope you tell them what a pathetic, asinine, juvenile, superficial, half-baked, lame attempt at a parable that was.

This is why I don't go to "church."

May I have the name and address of this so-called church? There is a letter I would like to write...or better yet, print off the responses to this thread and give it to them.

Furthermore, reading this almost brings tears to my eyes. I took a lot of ridicule and bullying about my looks, even from my own family, so I know how useless it can make you feel to be rejected because of your looks. It was never my nature to be bitter and mean, but that is what I've become because I've always known what kind of reaction to expect from people, and I despise every one of them. I used to be happy and outgoing and never until I understood why I was rejected by my peers. Now, I'm bitter, withdrawn and depressed. So, to have a laugh at others' expenses really sends me around the bend.

Again, I'd love to contact the members of this alleged church.

How awful. If they were referring to "physical" ugliness, they should be ashamed. There is only one way to handle this (in my mind)...whatever your choice may be to stay or leave this church, write the pastor a letter detailing your feeling and disappointment in the congregation. Ask that it be published in the weekly bulletin. I wouldn't let another weekend go by without speaking my feelings - but I tend to be rather outspoken and bothered by things like this.
