Three months to kill before Nursing School... what to do

Published

In less than three months, I begin Nursing school. I'm super excited and wish that it would start tomorrow. While the 15 month program is super intense, I kind of like the fact that I can relax with my family until it begins. However, what would be some recommendations as to how to prepare for what lies ahead. Is there any must have books to read, Youtube video's to watch or anything that I should do to help acclimate once the program begins?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks....

Don't do anything. Enjoy your free time while you still can. People told me the same thing before I started nursing school and I thought they were being dramatic. Now I'm halfway through my second semester and I seriously have a calendar to count down the days till summer break.

I have a calendar to count down every single semester, too. Finally in my last one.. Once you're in it, you will spend most of your time looking forward to being OUT.

Enjoy your free time. Nothing you can do will entirely prepare you for it, so you may as well get your mental rest in while you can.

Watch shows, read your favorite types of books, clean your house. Enjoy every single day and relax.

I bought my book early and studied before starting school. It didn't help me at all. So take my advice and the advice of the previous two posters!

Just relax! If you want to do something do it now. Prepare your family and friends that once nursing school starts you won't have a lot of time to spend with them. Nursing school is a crazy ride. Have fun!!

Read a novel, go out with friends, take a vacation, sleep...

If you want to prepare yourself for NS there are a couple of school related things that absolutely will help you, in addition to what PPs said and enjoy yourself! Memorize the lab values of the most common labs, memorize normal Vital sign readings, and familiarize yourself with dimensional analysis for doing dosage calculations. Any other learning ahead of time is just going to cause confusion, IMHO.

Just relax & enjoy having free time. I'm halfway done and I can't wait to have free time again.

I agree- this is the time to get together with friends, take a vacation, etc.

As it gets close, one thing I WOULD recommend is making a game plan for how to keep the house clean, easy meal prep, how you'll fit in exercise, and other things that will help you maintain your sanity during school.

Go to vegas! lol! deffinately enjoy your time off as much as you can, spend as much time with your family and friends as you can, cause once you are in Nursing School, you will fall off the face of the earth

Isn't the wait headed into school exciting?

I agree that relaxation is important. In fact, figure out some nonnegotiable time NOW and commit to it through school. Its vital you remain in touch with who you are outside of school as you complete this journey.

I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CONVEY HOW IMPORTANT THIS ADVICE IS! In my experience, reading ahead is useless. What your professors might cover is unknowable at this point, so reading textbooks is not of value just yet. Lab values, vital signs, and math competence are of value to EVERY nurse.

Do you have any medical background?
