In less than three months, I begin Nursing school. I'm super excited and wish that it would start tomorrow. While the 15 month program is super intense, I kind of like the fact that I can relax with my family until it begins. However, what would be some recommendations as to how to prepare for what lies ahead. Is there any must have books to read, Youtube video's to watch or anything that I should do to help acclimate once the program begins?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks....
Beau
I'm going to go against the grain here and say do some Dosage calculations practice! You're in an accelerated program so your time will be extremely limited once school starts.
I wished my program would have told me about it in my acceptance packet because I would have prepared for it earlier. We lost a couple of classmates after the first test. We had to pass with a 90% in three tries or we were not allowed to go to clinicals for the semester. I passed on the first try so I was super relieved but we had some people go all the way to the 3rd time. We also had 4 students in our class who did not pass in three times the prior semester who had to take the class again. I hear in next level we have to take the exam he first week and pass with a 100% so I will definitely be boning up on it this summer.
I just got my acceptance letter today :) I have about 5 months to kill. After I finish up this spring semester I have a couple weeks off before I get started with my last pre-req during the summer. After that I'm more than likely gonna work a little bit to save up some cash being that I won't be working during nursing school. I'll probably stop working 2 weeks before the semester starts and literally do nothing at all. Enjoy your break :) I know I will. This is going to be a tough journey! Good luck :)
If you want to invest in making your first semester easier- go ahead and make flashcards as you want for the drugs you are about to learn. That is probably my weakest part of my academic career as a nursing student so I can only give that as good advice. Otherwise, enjoy your one and only summer of free time! Think of it as the last summer before you are officially a professional nurse. Since you are a nursing student, you will have a lot more expectations of professionalism in the future than other colleges. Make sure you take the time to enjoy yourself now and in the future! And congratulations! Welcome to the club!
Greetings,
My wife is a math instructor for a nursing program and rusty math skills derail careers. Just like the joke about how do musician make to Carnegie Hall....practice practice practice. If you math skills are sharp you will also be able to focus on more on your others courses.
All the best and congratulations on our acceptance!

Trying to prepare ahead of time for nursing school is admirable, but, it's like trying to prepare for being sucked up into the vortex of an F5 tornado, you can't. Nursing school is a pressure cooker environment that puts you under a tremendous amount of stress. With good study habits and attendance everyone survives. One thing I would highly recommend you do before NS starts is learn a way to decrease your stress and anxiety level that can be accomplished in 5 or 10 minutes no matter where you are, like meditation, visualization, or something like that. It will help pull you through when you want to give up.
I would also suggest mind-numbing/trashy television. Females tend to enjoy the "Real Housewives" series. I plan to binge watch Family Guy when spring break gets here.
Hey buddy, not all women want to watch real housewives...I would much rather watch seasons of Family Guy and American Dad on netflix LOL
