This week, I learned (7/18).....

Nurses General Nursing

Published

1. All work and no play for seven straight days makes ixchel a mean girl. I think I may owe some apologies when I go back to work. :(

2. A young person is capable of being hypoxic to anoxic for so long their brain swells before their heart stops. (Particularly when they've had a lifetime of ignored asthma exacerbation so to get used to chronic hypoxia.)

3. Regarding said person, I have many cuss words for the people who could have done more for her.

4. Pools get slimy fast.

5. This person exists: VITAS - Седьмой элемент / The 7th Element - YouTube

6. I love the pet therapy thread! (If you haven't seen it, go to my profile and see threads I've started. I think it's the one I started before this one.)

7. I'm attempting to go off caffeine. I'm an idiot.

8. I want to be an FBI agent. Mulder and Scully just make it look so damn cool.

9. Apparently, a wonderful perk of working for a hospital is a fast-acting employee health department. It's good to know my potential HIV and Hep status quickly after a needle stick.

10. Press Ganey did not ask questions I hoped they would ask on our survey.

11. I'm not okay with the waxing and waning of adequate staffing, especially when they have yet to actually "officially" change the staffing requirements for my unit to what they "officially changed it to" two years ago. NOT COOL. This is actually what led to number 1.

What have you learned this week?

I learned that ostomy care has not really changed in the last 10 years.

Or, sneakier old enemies.

Ahhh very true. Maybe I'm just too nice and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt too much. The world may never know.

I've learned that sometimes, self care needs to be a priority. I think a lot of us in healthcare tend to forget that… at least, I did.

^Agree.

I learned that my vacation in the fall has been confirmed; my 10 days got approved! :D

I also learned this week:

I have wonderful co-workers that are great at resources outside of work and can be of great help-they are the most awesome people to work with-this is something I know already, but it's worth posting again; and again... :D

The heat doesn't agree with my body...my CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome) has decided to flare up, even though my flares are the worst in the winter, it has been a battle between working and having my right arm to my scapular muscles constantly burning when it's time to take my medicine-my greatest therapy is sleep, although I did sleep through my therapist appointment. :(

My saving grace is my neurologist-I affectionately call him Dr. Spock (he blushes at that). :)

Which goes to my next "learned" lesson-having a therapist that unconditionally helps me has made me a better person-I used to try to avoid going to therapy; I was very apathetic towards it and would try to cancel-I thought about this today as I slept through my appointment and panicked-and she gave me a "come to Jesus moment " on establishing a therapeutic relationship; I have come to value that relationship and I have learned that she is integral to giving me the support to evolve into a better person. :D

Ahhh very true. Maybe I'm just too nice and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt too much. The world may never know.

I do that. I'm a sucker. I figure if I'm sincere, well, so must this one or that one be. Sometimes, I'll get slammed. Most of the time, I can take it, and I don't care.

(most)

When I was a vat tech nurses and MDs were the worst clients.

"So I'm going to teach you how to give Fluffy fluids for her kidney disease."

"Ohh, you don't need to I'm an RN/MD"

"Ok, but its really not the same as with people..."

"Don't worry, I know, kthnxbye"

*walks out the door*

"You don't even want to go over the medication instructions? No? Ok..."

Funny thing was I went there in a hurry so I was still in scrubs. I actually asked, "um, how do I bathe a cat?"..."well, do you're best. Three times a week or whatever he'll allow"....I should have googled cat groomers. I didn't even know they existed.

My husband has designated me the wound care nurse for our cat. My exact words were, "I work with people. I know nothing here"...I wondered why he thought I would, and your post shows me the answer, because many of us think we know...time for that q12hr treatment😕

I learned that chopwood carrywater is a guy.

I always envisioned a beautiful Pocahontas type, just killing it with her relentless, tireless work ethic, running circles around everyone else on the unit!

I hate reoccurring kidney stones.

That a person can remain in Sustained VTach for 5 hours despite all the interventions you try, and still live. Guess who got an AICD the next day.

That patient had me on pins and needles all night!

That I missed my kiddo lots and lots while he was away, and that in 2 years when he graduates high school I am really gonna be a mess.

Oh god, me too. I'll buy us each bunches of Kleenex.

I learned that reading one post about pregnancy from swallowing semen can give me an instant migraine.

Can we not? Please.

Are you kidding me? wow. /shakingmyhead

That I really need some positive change in my life as I am becoming a VERY grumpy person - pregnant or not I'm becoming very tired of the crap and I'm not being so quite about it anymore.

That there is a headache associated with sexual activity type 1 and type 2 (I've heard of the problem - just not the two types).

That my employer is just as ridiculous as the rest and will refuse to accept that real change needs to occur or we will continue to lose the good staff we have.

That it is getting darker earlier and I am NOT ready for the winter.

That I LOVE applying for scholarships as it brings the creative writer out of me. Even if I don't get the money - it's been rewarding to challenge myself.

That some surgeons apparently don't realize that the MD behind their name shouldn't stand for major **** (slang word for male anatomy).
