I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

QuoteScott Hall, one of the 19 defendants in the Fulton County, Georgia case about alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, became the first defendant to reach a plea deal with prosecutors Friday.
Hall changed his plea from not guilty and instead pleaded guilty in Fulton County court to five misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performance of election duties. Hall, a bail bondsman, was sentenced to five years probation, a $5,000 fine and 200 hours of community service. He must also write a letter of apology to the citizens of the state of Georgia.
Mr Hall made the wise choice to say what he knows under oath rather than go to jail for Trump's ambitions. How many more will there be? I might be willing to bet that there are others who would like to avoid even a small stay in a Fulton County detention facility. I would also be willing to bet that the prosecutor isn't really as interested in the guy who facilitated illegal and unauthorized access to the voting machines as she is in the people wanting that access.

Obviously short of building a wall and allowing zero immigrants whatsoever, and kicking those here out, the border situation is going to be weaponized against him. But the narrative that he is doing nothing and ignoring the situation, doesn't ring true to me.
I'm sure the granting of work permits is a controversial way of dealing with it, but that helps them get off the system and taking care of themselves. We're at full employment and anyone that wants a job can find a job, so they wouldn't be taking away jobs, and it's likely the work they do will be menial labor that needs the workers.
I don't blame Republicans for using the border situation against him. It's been a mess since he was elected.

Point taken. I guess it would be better to he's trying to not draw attention to what's going on there.
You would have thought since he was in Phoenix, he might swing down there and see for himself and talk to people close to the situation.
I'm sure his handlers don't want him anywhere near that mess.

I'm not going to say he isn't trying to distract from a bad situation. But I can only imagine if he went down there, he'd be accused of politicizing it for a photo op. He couldn't win. I wonder too if the governor of Texas would have given him a tour, or ignored him like DeSantis did when he toured Florida after the hurricane.
Gen. Mark Milley was trump's top military guy. He's been trying to retire, but Tuberville's block wouldn't let him be replaced. Dem senators got together and figured out a way to get around it and managed to get a few promotions done, including Milley's replacement. I'm reading that he's planning to testify in the Jan 6 trial.
At least once lately, trump has been hinting around about death penalties for rebellious members of the military. It was one of his truth social posts. Milley is talking back and telling Jack Smith what he knows.

Well, you're partially right...he couldn't win. He would have flubbed it up somehow. That's why his handlers didn't want him even close to it.
No one would have accused him of politicizing it. Most Americans, including some blue city mayors who are now coming around to it, realize it is a real problem.

Disagree. They would have found some way to say that it a little too late and not good enough, a political move, and spun it away from him trying to deal with the situation.
But you're right. Now that it's affecting their cities they are speaking up. The New York Mayor, a Biden ally has been particularly critical of Biden. (In a way I like that allies are speaking up against Biden, which was a sore spot when people kept silent about Trump's antics but that's not the topic).
Somehow immigration is figuring into the impending shutdown?
QuoteArkansas Rep. Steve Womack said he and other McCarthy allies want to keep the government open, but emphasized that in any short-term spending bill, "there's gotta be something in it for us as well, and what we really want and what we have been begging for is the ability to get better control of our southern border."
