The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Yep, time to ramp up that the news media is fake.

The trouble is that while Trump seems a bit unhinged, he has people on his side.  We can't dismiss this idea.  Yeah the Biden administration is a mess and people don't like him, but Trumps rise in the polls also has a lot to do with his supporters believing in him and feeding him.

As a side note what does Trump mean "if the Fake News Media is correct....."?  You can't have it both ways.

This from congressman Paul Gosar about Milley:

"the homosexual-promoting-BLM-activist Chairman of the military joint chiefs”—Of course, we now know that the deviant Milley was coordinating with Nancy Pelosi to hurt President Trump, and treasonously working behind Trump's backIn a better society, quislings like the strange sodomy-promoting General Milley would be hung.”

What exactly about the very productive and effective Biden administration is a mess? Can you be specific?

Thank you for pointing out that many of the people on Trump's side are people like Gosar and Boebert and Taylor-Green and the Proud Boys and the KKK and the Qanon crowd and the 3 percenters and the Boogaloo Boys and the Oath Keepers. Trump surrounds himself with these type people.  Remember?

Trump also will argue that the clause doesn't apply to him because "the Fourteenth Amendment applies to one who 'engaged in insurrection or rebellion,’ not one who only 'instigated' any action,” Blue wrote.

The former president's lawyers also said the challenge should be dismissed because he is not yet a candidate under the meaning of Colorado election law, which they contend isn't intended to settle constitutional disputes.

Trump's first defense is that Colorado is violating his right to free speech.  His second defense is that the instigator of insurrection isn't really an insurrectionist. His third attempt at derailing this attempt to keep him off the Colorado ballot is that he is not yet an official candidate because he hasn't won the GOP primary.  My bet is that the judge reminds Trump that it is expected that states would anticipate that the GOP may well nominate a man under multiple indictments for 90+ criminal acts.  Trying to overthrow the federal government and stealing/hiding/lying about top secret documents should disqualify people from the presidency.

Quote

The New York attorney general won a major victory in her civil case against Donald J. Trump on Tuesday when a New York judge determined that the former president fraudulently inflated the value of his assets to obtain favorable loans and insurance deals.

The decision by Justice Arthur F. Engoron precedes a trial that is scheduled to begin Monday, and will considerably smooth Attorney General Letitia James's path forward as she seeks a penalty of about $250 million.

Justice Engoron's decision narrows the issues that will be heard, effectively deciding that the trial was not necessary to find that Mr. Trump was liable and that the core of Ms. James's case was valid. It represents a major blow to Mr. Trump, whose lawyers had sought to persuade the judge to throw out many of the claims against the former president.

In his order, Justice Engoron wrote scathingly about Mr. Trump's defenses, saying that the former president and the other defendants, including his two adult sons and his company, ignored reality when it suited their business needs. "In defendants' world,” he wrote, "rent-regulated apartments are worth the same as unregulated apartments; restricted land is worth the same as unrestricted land; restrictions can evaporate into thin air.”

"That is a fantasy world, not the real world,” he added.

The judge also levied sanctions on Mr. Trump's lawyers for making arguments that he previously rejected. He ordered each to pay $7,500, noting that he had previously warned them that the arguments in question bordered on being frivolous.

Repeating them was "indefensible,” Justice Engoron wrote.

Let the delays begin.

Yep,  onto the appeals as Judge rules to terminate Trump and sons N.Y. business license and place NY properties under receivership. Trial is to start October 2nd.

Judge Finds Trump Inflated Property Values, a Victory for New York A.G.

The decision strips former President Donald J. Trump of control over signature properties, and simplifies the path for Attorney General Letitia James, whose lawsuit accused him of overvaluing his holdings by as much as $2.2 billion.

Quote

Engoron granted Attorney General Letitia James' motion for summary judgment, finding Trump, his sons, and others "to be liable as a matter of law for persistent violations" of New York state law. He found the financial statements the Trumps provided to lenders and insurers for about a decade to be false and said they repeatedly engaged in fraud.

In the order, the judge rejected Trump's deposition testimony in which the former president said that the financial statements were not fraudulent because they contained disclaimers. Trump said the statements contained a "worthless clause" in them warning lenders and others that they shouldn't be relied on.

Tuesday, the judge said that "the defendants' reliance on these 'worthless' disclaimers is worthless.”

While the trial will determine the size of the penalty, Justice Engoron's ruling granted one of the biggest punishments Ms. James sought: the cancellation of business certificates that allow some of Mr. Trump's New York properties to operate, a move that could have major repercussions for the Trump family business.

The decision will not dissolve Mr. Trump's entire company, but it sought to terminate his control over a flagship commercial property at 40 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan and a family estate in Westchester County. Mr. Trump might also lose control over his other New York properties, including Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, though that will likely be fought over in coming months....

Justice Engoron's decision narrows the issues that will be heard at trial, deciding that the core of Ms. James's case was valid. It represents a major blow to Mr. Trump, whose lawyers had sought to persuade the judge to throw out many claims against the former president..

Excuse me sir,  U.S. has state and federal business regulations that when not followed and brought to the governments attention,  violations confirmed , legal judgement and financial penalties awarded. Must not have paid attention in government classes or learned from prior legal representation:  failed Trump N.J Casinos closed,  Trump University fraud payment, dissolution of Trump Charity  etc.

How Donald Trump Bankrupted His Atlantic City Casinos, but StillEarned Millions

Trump Brand = tarnished brass.

You may not agree, but I'm sure you're well aware of what Biden critics are saying.

I'm asking for specifics about the "mess", not the thoughtless regurgitation of criticism and characterizations that come from his political opponents. There's a distinct difference.

Did you all catch that Trump countered Biden's visit with striking union workers by accepting an invitation from management of a non union shop and then, in his confusion, telling them that they needed to tell their union bosses to endorse him?

"It doesn't make a damn bit of difference what you get because in two years you're all going to be out of business," Trump told several hundred blue-collar workers gathered at a non-union auto supplier outside Detroit.

I bet that gave them confidence.

U.S. automakers have complained that the Biden administration's rules promoting electric vehicles risk burdening them with excessive costs, but there is no evidence to suggest they are headed towards bankruptcy as Trump suggested.

Spurred on by incentives, automakers are sinking tens of billions of dollars into new domestic factories to meet demand for electrified vehicle sales, which captured 8.9% of the U.S. market during the first half of 2023 and continue to grow.

Promising to end the government's EV push if elected, Trump urged the UAW to back him in the presidential race.

"I don't care what you get in the next two weeks or three weeks or five weeks," he said. "They're going to be closing up and they're going to be building those cars in China and other places. It's a hit job in Michigan and on Detroit."

Sure Don, sure, and I bet only you can fix it.

I guess Biden's strategy of pretending there is nothing of concern going on at the border is working.

That's not very specific, but I appreciate a reminder that you believe characterizations like that in spite of the evidence to the contrary.  Currently, House Republicans are ignoring the negotiated deal that was made when they tried to blow up the debt ceiling process and they are moving quickly toward shutting down our government while some other Republicans are scrambling to exempt border patrol and ICE agents from the furloughs and income loss that will be experienced by 2-3  million employees of the federal government.

The Biden Budget Proposal has some very specific immigration and border requests and recommendations. For example;

Quote

Enhances Border Security and Immigration Enforcement. Strengthening border security and providing safe, lawful pathways for migration remain top priorities for the Administration. The Budget includes nearly $25 billion for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an increase of almost $800 million over the 2023 enacted level when controlling for border management amounts. The Budget includes funds for CBP to hire an additional 350 Border Patrol Agents, $535 million for border security technology at and between ports of entry, $40 million to combat fentanyl trafficking and disrupt transnational criminal organizations, and funds to hire an additional 460 processing assistants at CBP and ICE.

McCarthy and House Republicans ignored Biden's budget and they reject bipartisan Senate legislation because they aren't as interested in governance as they are interested in grievance and grousing.
