The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Witch hunt? Did Biden compel the former guy to take all those boxes? Did Biden tell him to ignore all requests from the national archives? Did Biden tell him that he ought to ask his lawyer to lie or destroy records? Did Biden tell him he could store records in a bathroom, so the FBI could find them easier?

I am not so naive as to think the former guy will pay any fines or serve time. He may even get elected. Or another Republican gets elected and pardons him. I still think having a trial and presentation of the evidence is important to the American public.

Nixon got a deal when he appointed Ford.

If a Democrat is in the White House Trump would have no such deal.  I wonder if he's choosing his running mate based on the idea that he might need a presidential pardon one day should a conviction come his way.  This indictment is probably going to take years to realize it's conclusion.

Are you saying Nixon knew Ford was going to pardon him in advance of his then undetermined Watergate-related crimes before he appointed Ford to replace Spiro Agnew? Not trying to derail the topic-- just that I hadn't seen evidence of that beyond speculation, and both denied there was a deal in advance.

As I've said before, Democrats better be careful what they wish for.

Biden probably beats Trump.

No way he beats DeSantis.

Yes.  Nixon was a known liar and denied many things, and that is my personal speculation as I'm not writing a scientific article or historical news article with facts and evidence, I'll think out loud about it.  Maybe they didn't make a deal, but when I Nixon appointed Ford as his VP I can't imagine that they didn't have that conversation.  Remember that was a long time ago and I was a tween/teen and was more attended to the Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family than I was politics.  LOL

In reading about it Nixon's approval ratings plummeted at the time leading up to his resignation.  Ford's approval ratings plummeted and we was unable to win re-election.

After his first indictment Trump's approval ratings were higher than Biden's.  It's too early to see what the latest round of indictment's does, but it seems business as usual in North Carolina yesterday with his long rambling speech to cheers.

We'll see where it all leads in the end.

I wonder if MTG has lost her security clearance yet. She just pulled a stunt that seemed to imitate one of trump's alleged crimes.

Reminds me a lot of the incident early in trump's term when he used classified information to impress a Russian diplomat (ambassador?). I wonder how much damage he really did with that decision.

Did y'all see the pictures from his lawyer's phone of those boxes stashed in hallways and a bathroom?

Does anybody have thoughts on his  possible motive(s)? Personally, I think it was greed plus mental illness plus sheer stupidity and incompetence. The gold standard for the role of the useful fool.

I think he's waiting for Trump to beat himself or self-destruct.

But take Trump out of the equation and it's a DeSantis vs. Biden race.  It's clear that DeSantis will sweep the entire Southeast.  What remains to be seen is what "never Trumpers", moderates and independents do and if they swing some areas towards Biden.  Most likely the "never Trumpers" will vote DeSantis as they are Republicans but just don't like Trump.

In a DeSantis vs. Biden race the swing states will decide.

Biden has an even bigger lead over DeSantis, should he be selected as the GOP candidate. Half of the Americans polled said that the president would win such a matchup, versus just 38 percent backing the Florida governor. The survey, of 1,500 "eligible voters in the United States," was conducted on April 24.

I agree with your thoughts.

I'd add there was a big segment of voters, not necessarily "never -Trumper" Republicans, but independents and moderates who voted for Biden only because he wasn't Trump.

De Santis will mop the floor with Biden in any debate.

Only in the eyes of those who'd never vote for him anyway.

I agree, there are moderates and independents that didn't vote for Trump because he's Trump.  Still there are moderates and independents and even some Republicans that don't like his brand, particularly his culture wars in the name of freedom and aren't about his "Make America Florida" theme.  Time will tell.

DeSantis is intelligent and can hold his own on a debate stage, particularly he can attack the republican talking points about Biden.  But "mop the floor" I'm not sure.  DeSantis also is ugly calling his opponent in the governors debate a "worn out old donkey".  Biden's issues are going to be his record and that he doesn't always quickly respond, but he's been doing this a long time.  He knows how to debate.

However, there is a thread about the 2024 election.  This is the Trump thread and right now we have Trump in the lead.  A debate with Trump and DeSantis is going to be good.  Any debate with Trump is a poop show.  I would decline to debate him and use his past behavior as a reason why.

After watching Desantis speaking at events past month, wholehartedly disagree as only focusing on grievance politics.  Bidens grasp of government, politics and concern for the middle class will be used to articulate on these topics.    Don't be fooled with periodic stuttering/misspeak which has occurred throughout career.

Second plane carrying migrants lands in California, with officials blaming Florida

Quote

A second plane carrying migrants arrived in Sacramento on Monday, according to California officials who say the transportation was arranged by the state of Florida.

Over the weekend, more than a dozen migrants from South America were flown on a chartered jet from New Mexico and dropped off in Sacramento.

Documents carried by the migrants appear to show that the weekend flight was arranged through the Florida Division of Emergency Management and that it was part of the state's program to relocate migrants, mostly from Texas, to other states, California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta said.

The contractor for the program is Vertol Systems Co., which coordinated similar flights that took dozens of Venezuelan asylum seekers from San Antonio to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts last year, he said.

Biden thanks Air Force Academy graduates for choosing 'service over self';

Quote

President Joe Biden on Thursday thanked U.S. Air Force Academy graduates for choosing "service over self" but said they now have the "great privilege" of leading in a world that will only get more confusing in the years to come. His appearance was punctuated by a stumble onstage after handing out diplomas to graduates.

"Graduates, you made a noble choice to lead a life of service,” Biden told more than 900 cadets in remarks on the sun-splashed field at Falcon Stadium in Colorado. "Now you also shoulder a great privilege and a mighty responsibility. Leadership, yeah leadership.”

After speaking, Biden participated in the presentation of diplomas, exchanging salutes and handshakes with each graduate as they were called to the stage and their loved ones cheered from the stands.

So the current President made a speech, stood for hours saluting and shook hands with 900 AF grads  in front of their families... good will support of the military + possibly a few votes.

This has been covered before...

I've never seen of or have heard any evidence of his stuttering throughout his career or in his younger days.  If you have any, love to see it.  As Tweety mentioned, the 2024 Election thread would be better place.

He does have a history of "misspeaking".  It's a miracle this man has been elevated to where he has, and for so long.

His misspeaking now is different.  Now it's forgetfulness, absent minded, etc.

Independents, maybe.   Not sure that'll be a big issue a year and a half from now.

Democrats?  LOL, doesn't matter.  They aren't voting for him anyway.

Living an hour away, it seems I hear of about every President doing this at least once.
