I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

A seven-count indictment charging former President Donald Trump and a top aide with counts including conspiracy to obstruct justice and concealing documents has been unsealed in a federal court in Miami.
The 49-page document outlines investigators' allegations against Trump and Walt Nauta, a former valet at the White House who left his role to join the ex-president as a personal aide, and accuses them of crimes that carry a maximum prison term of up to 20 years on the most serious count.
According to the court docket, Trump is scheduled to make his initial appearance on the charges before U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Miami.
Have fun reading the indictment here
Pages 28-33 list classified and top secret documents.... also describes how Walt Nauta under Trumps direction moved 64 boxes from Mar-a Lago storage room AFTER subpoena issued. Trumps 2 lawyers after appearing on 7AM morning news shows, Jim Trusty and John Rowley have resigned.
QuotePer @gtconway3d : "This is the most historically important criminal case since the Aaron Burr case...when he was tried for treason.”
Trump 37 count indictment says he took classified docs that included info regarding defense & weapons capabilities of both U.S. & foreign countries; U.S. nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of U.S. & allies to military attack & plans for possible retaliation in response to an attack -- starts on page 46.

I was relieved when Nixon resigned, but furious when Ford pardoned him. It made it look like a President could escape accountability and set that as a precedent.
I hope the US doesn't make the same mistake again.

Nixon got a deal when he appointed Ford.
If a Democrat is in the White House Trump would have no such deal. I wonder if he's choosing his running mate based on the idea that he might need a presidential pardon one day should a conviction come his way. This indictment is probably going to take years to realize it's conclusion.

Once upon a time, conservative values included logic and intellectual rigor. Bill Buckley is spinning in his grave.
That's what makes me gloomy.
It's not whining in my opinion. People whine when they are accepting of the truth but don't like it. This is different. It's a genuine belief in Trump that has me so disheartened. The press is feeding the idea that's it's a witch hunt invented to stop Trump. In April after Trump's other indictment he carried an 84% approval rating with Republicans.

Me, too, except that I was disappointed rather than infuriated by the pardon. The country was in chaos then, too ... including the literal assassination of political leaders (the Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Harvey Milk - to name a few). I was disappointed but understood the need to "take the temperature down."

Tomato/tomahto ... we'll need to agree to disagree.

It was/is a witch hunt.
At the same time, sounds like he is guilty.

Oh yes, I was part of the protests right after he was elected and as dark as it was I still had hope.

I'm glad yesterday was a day of hope your you. My hope in this country has long been destroyed, probably started in 2017 when he took office, and was intensified by how we acted during covid, and how the new generation of parents are behaving around library books, race issues and queer issues.
My wish is that he is legally held accountable for whatever he's done, but I'm not hopeful.
