I am in Massachusetts. It snows here. Typically a lot. And gets cold. We are expecting snow Saturday night into Sunday, maybe 6-12" in Boston, more in the Northern and Western suburbs. Blizzard conditions with the wind. Anyway, wouldn't you know there is already mass pandemonium at the grocery store (I park in their lot every day). Also, the hardware stores selling out of shovels and ice melt. We live in New England people. How are you only just now figuring out snow melt and a shovel are a good thing to own?!
My school is already going crazy about possible snow day on Tuesday. Snow will likely be cleared up by then but parents are already calling. Like they expect the admin to make a call NOW for Tuesday, LOL.

I am in Central MA...and I was SO hoping for a 2 hour delay today because they were calling for a small amount of snow, but we got nothing! Anyway, no talks about Tuesday yet, but just glad we already have Monday off! We are still having outdoor recess despite the frigid temps!

I'm in Maryland, between DC and Baltimore - we got a two hour delay today. I didn't want a full snow day, we did that this past Monday, if we miss too many days of school, they'll extend our school year.

My dad used to be THE person who made the decision. He would leave at 2am and drive every single one of the school system's bus routes in his 1970's Honda Civic to assess the situation. I can't tell you how many times he had to get pulled out of the ditch. Somehow our phone number got out and our family got DEATH threats when he didn't close the schools. One crazy person actually tried to blow up our house with a pipe bomb.
This is terrible! And a little adorable, about the 70's Civic....those things run anywhere and forever.

sadly, I have learned New England forecasters are not any better. I moved to MA in 2008 and every year we are amazed at how wrong they are sometimes. Sometimes they nail it perfectly, but other times they are WAY off. This storm started out as all rain and 54 degrees and now it is pretty much all snow and 30 below Monday with wind chill factor.

I'm right here with you in MO and i think because last weeks storm was so much worse than they originally predicted they are all crazed now lol

I'm in Missouri, too. We got 15 inches last weekend -- 15 inches of wet, heavy snow. And then freezing rain. And then more snow -- I don't even know what the total was. The snow on the 12,000 square foot horse barn and arena slid off, sheering of all of the outdoor lights on the way down. Then we had a six foot mound of snow right in front of the barn door. We managed to plow out our own .1 mile driveway, but the .7 mile road that the HOA maintains didn't get plowed out until Tuesday. Five days we were snowbound, and the satellite dish was covered with snow so we couldn't watch TV. (And AN was still down.?)
We're supposed to get 3-6 more inches (there is still plenty of snow on the ground) starting tonight, and winds are projected to be 50 mph, according the the neighbors who managed to brush the snow off of their satellite dish). That's a danged blizzard! I went to the store and got chips, soda and chocolate in addition to all of the healthy foods I bought a week ago!
I’m in the mountains of VA, and it’s missing us mostly this time! Man, I don’t know...that’s a lot of snow. When we get over a foot, everything really comes to a standstill with these rural backroads. VDOT can’t do them first, so we usually miss at least a day or two. I hope you get a snow day! ?
I don't have any school age kids anymore so I don't look for the school closing notices like I used to. Our school district though doesn't do delayed openings and hasn't for many years. They are either open the full day or closed. The criteria for closing is if the roads are bad enough that school buses can't get the "county kids" to school on time.
That being said I have noticed they have been a lot faster to close schools based solely on the weather forecast. There have been several times that school was closed based on a storm forecast and then the storm totally missed us. They will also close for extreme cold when years ago they never used to.
I know I will sound like one of those old codgers that walked to school 20 miles uphill both ways but...honestly when I was a kid we were expected to go to school in much worse weather than the kids now are. I don't remember school ever closing for cold weather and it took a serious blizzard amount of snow for school to close for that.
