The First Days of Nursing School by the Fall 2009ers!!!

Published

Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!

So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses :p

Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.

Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.

I start in 19 and 1/2 hours, and every hour that passes i get more nervous!

Best of luck to you all. I thinking nursing school is like a Dickens novel, the best of times and the worst of times. Remember your enthusiasm it will serve you well in the difficult to deal with parts. The advice to save some money on textbooks is good. Cherish these times and the friendships you will build. Don't allow yourself to get too frustrated with the inanities of the SON. And it can be done no matter how hard it seems. I just finished officially on Friday!!!

First I want to congratulate all of you. It is quite an accomplishment to get accepted into the programs that you all have due to the demand and the lack of teachers available. I am a third term student and I remember being excited like you all. Thank you so much for expressing it because sometimes I just want it done and the excitement has dissipated. Your postings have helped me to put things into perspective again.

Thank you all and good luck to you in the upcoming semester. Enjoy the ride.

I am a new Nursing Student as of Sept 1st 09'. I am very excited yet nervous as well. I already started reading my fundamentals book in hopes to give myself a boost for when classes start.

Good Luck to all you Nursing Students!!!

I am so excited to start also! :D Our first class day is the 24th and orientation is on the 21st from 8:30-3p (what all do they have to tell us that takes all day?) I have been driving my husband nuts saying "guess what, Im a nursing student". I have been waiting so long, I started taking pre-reqs in Ohio and now 4 schools, getting married, haveing a baby, turning 32 and now I am a NURSING STUDENT!! I am waiting to get my grants before I get my books, as y'all know they are pricey. Anyway I hope everyone has a great year and none of us drops out.

I had orientation some months ago and it was exciting. But since then I had been in summer school taking some classes that I dont even need for school, but yeah, I did it anyway (for fun).

I had also bought most of my books, it cost me in all around 150.00 dollars. Y so cheap because of criaglist!! thank goodness for criaglist!! I just made a post asking for people to sell their nursing books and I listed the one that I need and sure enough there were people who just got done with the program and sold me their books for about 20-30 bucks per book. So I got a deal there. However, I had not touch any of them. I dont feel like reading my fundamental book, it just seem so thick. Instead, I choose to finally read the Twilight series, cos I didn't make time for it that last semester.

So nursing school starts for me today at 1400 and I should be in bed already, but I am not tired yet.

good luck everyone!!!

mstacyi,

I also started reading the Twilight series....read the first book last weekend and now on New Moon. School starts for me on Thursday, so I am not going to finish the series before school starts, but going to use these books as a reward for studying once school starts.

My first day was the 13th - just an orientation. They informed us then that our syllabus for Fundamentals is 99 pages.

Today was my second day - we met the second year students and they gave us some pointers. It was great, they eased my mind a little bit. We also took basic tests - Fire Safety, HIPAA, TB, Chemical Safety, and BBP's. We were there from 8-4 and had a two hour break for lunch - to mingle.

We have a quiz before every class and they will randomly pick 10 of them that will count towards our final grade.

I have class from 8-11 tomorrow and there are actually three classes in that period, so 3 quizzes. YIPPEEEE!!!!!

I best get back to reading!!

Looking forward to hearing about everyone elses first days.

wow is all i have to say about my first day, plenty of work to do, quiz tomorrow if that is what the first day is it will be a rough few years!

Wow, everyone must be exhausted or busy doing hw because I know there were more than this that started today. Maybe stayed up all night with excitement and now crashed
