Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!
So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses
Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.
Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.
Our instructor called us little baby nurses today. I was so proud . I get to sign my name: arab_rider, SN. I kept thinking, "I'm in nursing class, learning nursing stuff!"
We did thermoregulation and skin assessment today.
I know the excitement will wear off somewhere near that blasted math test but meanwhile :hpygrp:.

My orientation is Friday from 8:30a-3p :(long day). My first class is Tuesday the 25th, and I am super excited!! Hey and when I get my boks at the books store I can go in ONE area not all over the place, I know its something little but its cool... (the ones I can't get online anyway). Oh, does anyone know if you are able to get last yrs books or do they have to be the new ones? Because I have found alot of the books under $3.
We have to have an 80% to pass and that is just on our test/quizzes. If you have a 79% on your tests/quizzes and your papers and other work would bring you up to an 80% too bad you're screwed! If you have an 80% or above though they'll add in your papers and other work grades to possibly get a better score.
Tomorrow is Orientation!! Nursing School starts on the 25!! YEAH! I got my uniforms, stethescope, and dansko shoes they are awesome by the way super comfortable. I have been doing drug calculations to brush up on my math, (been a long time since ratio proportion), and reading fundmentals. Can't sleeep at night because I am so excited to finally be starting. It has been such a long road to get here and now that it is within reach it is so very exciting!
Good luck to all Nursing Students Fall 2009!
anyone want to send me some sites for the nursing text books?
the four main ones i need are
Dimensional analysis for meds. 4th edition
Nursing care plans. 6th edition
pharmacology: a nursing process approach. 6th edition
fundamentals of nursing. 7th edition
ive been looking all over but i kept on finding older version for real cheap prices but idk if i can use them or not...
We were told by our instructors to get the latest versions of the textbooks. I priced them at Amazon and they were cheaper but the majority were older versions. I know they are expensive but sometimes it is just worth it to "Bite the bullet" and get them at the bookstore. Hopefully when it is over for us we can resell and get a little back!
Good Luck:)
