Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!
So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses
Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.
Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.
congrats to all you new nursing students.
i'm not there yet. i've taken a year of general classes/pre-reqs too and then decided to go to allied medical and technical institute for my lpn rather than stay with luzerne for my rn.
i have an interview set up for aug 24th at 6:30pm. very excited even though i won't even start classes until sept of 2010. that's okay though, because i have worked very hard and want this time to relax.
so---good luck to everyone!
remember: you only get what you put into it.
We had orientation for 4 HOURS today...but it calmed my nerves and made me even more excited about the coming semester! All the faculty seem very nice and eager to teach us. First day of classes is tomorrow!!! Good luck to those starting tomorrow too...i'm excited to hear what everyone else's first day is like :)
.. I got orientation on 08/25 then real classes start the next day, then first clinical 2 days later! cant wait to start!
my school gave the basic nursing course in the summer so ive already learned and done all the basic stuff and even had about 10 clinical days of actual patient care.. so i cant wait to jump into the REAL "RN stuff" :w00t:
I already have 4 of my books and OMG my med-surg book weighs a ton - no kidding!! lol .. nonetheless i know its full of all the info ill need
Congratulations! Some advice from a 2nd year student. DONT FALL BEHIND IN THE READING. I did and it was always anxiety producing trying to catch up. I made it through the first year - got a B both semesters and worked full time so it can be done. Classes are more interesting if you can participate in the lecture and if you havent done the reading you just have to listen. You will be way more confident in class when you know whats going on. The math was beyond scary for me as I havent had to "solve for x" in over 25 years but its easy once you know what you're doing. Good luck - you'll do great and love it. I did.
First of all, congrats to all who are beginning this exciting new journey! I, too, am a new nursing student this fall and don't start until August 31st although on the calendar it has us scheduled to do some things that Sunday before so we'll see! We had our first orientation back in May and have another one next week. We have our syllabus and calendar for this semester though so I know what you're saying about how huge it is! Very overwhelming! I alternate between being excited and scared and I think the scaryness comes from the unknown just like when you start a new job or you move to a new state. Please keep me posted as your days progress since you started so much sooner and I will make sure to do the same. Good luck! Think happy, positive thoughts! This will be us soon!
today was our first day in lab and that was so fun, I love that part of it, the first day of school so much was going on I was like all of this on the first day wow, as the next 2 days passed it seemed like as long as you looked threw your calendar and read before class it was not bad, still a lot of note taking and reading but I really really loved lab, we did bed changes occupied and not, shaving, bathing, oral care, nail care, massages, infant bathing and stuff like that!
I just started Monday!!!
Get organized immediately!!! I can see how it could be very easy in the first weeks to fall behind if you don't set up a system for yourself. Notebooks, highliters, planners....whatever. Get organized the first night. Write everything down. There is so much and it can make you feel overwhelmed and scatterbrained, but if you take the time to really organize yourself it will pay off big time down the road!!
Good luck to all my fellow students embarking on this journey! :heartbeat
I too am starting and we had our orientation last Tuesday from 9am-1pm. They definately scared the crap out of me. We need a 73 to pass. Our first day of school is Sept 7th but because its a holiday I am going to have my clinical before lecture. I am excited and our syllabus is sooo thick. I hope to get my books soon so I can read I ahead, I understand better when I read ahead. Good luck to all of us. I am done with all my prerequisites and electives so I only have nursing classes left.
