The First Days of Nursing School by the Fall 2009ers!!!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!

So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses :p

Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.

Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.

I wish all of you good luck and success in your new career.

The best advice I got when I started nursing school was from a senior student. He said take it one week at a time. It looks like a mountain (and feels like one all of the way to the end) but if you do what you can do this week and do it well, you will make it. So far, so good. I graduate in December!

We just had our orientation yesterday (wow was that overwhelming). Classes officially start Monday, the 24th. I'm super nervous. Now just to get get books tomorrow and start reading so I can stay on top of things. Good Luck EVERYONE!!

i picked up and flipped thru my 2500-page Med Surg book last nite

Hi everyone!

I live in Oregon and won't start school until September 28th. We had orientation June 4th and I was really glad to have it early in the summer. Unfortunately, we can't get our books until after Labor Day. I'll be in an ADN program and would like to pursue my BSN after that - preferably online. AD was the quickest way to get my degree and be out working.

I liked harley's advice on taking it one week at a time. Sounds like a good idea.

oh my gosh, i feel the exact same way!! i used to hit up pre-nursing all the time, and now i spend nearly all my time on allnurses here "general nursing student" and i'm sooo excited!!

orientation is aug. 26, and i start aug. 31, so nothing to report yet!

are you going to motlow by any chance because those are the exact dates and events for me and that's where i'm going!

I'm attending LBCC in Albany. I haven't heard of Motlow. Where's that located?

Oh okay. You were the first person who started and had orientation on the same days so I thought we might be classmates. My school is in Tennessee.

I have my orientation on August 27th, and then classes start August 31st. I am so nervous because I have spent all summer with no information. Thank god for allnurses! It has provided me with so much information. I have already ordered most of my books, and have some of them. I need to get a few that I have to buy from my school store. I am just so ready to start. I am nervous, but I feel like if I can do all those pre-req's, then I can do anything!!! Congrats to all my other fellow new nursing students!!!

Hi there!

I'm in the same boat as you. I just started nursing school on Monday. Yay! Congratulations, it's so exciting!!!

I agree with Harley, one week at a time. I used to feel very overwhelmed and I just look at one week at a time. I have made A's so far in nursing college and I am on my last course. Graduating in 4 months!

I'm jealous, I don't start until October!!!!!:(
