Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!
So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses
Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.
Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.
I was done with my first week of nursing school on Thursday. ( We dont have classes on Friday, which feels so darn good, I got to spend ALLL day studying) plus my two weekend days. Boy did we ever get alot of information, this past week. I feel so overwhelmed. I spent time reading chapters and I was actually retaining all of it! We have our first test on Monday which will be on Pharmacology principles, and some Pharm. math. Im not too excited about all of the formulas....i wish someone would recommend good way to remember all of those, but nevertheless its only going to be 20 out of the 50 questions we have.
Also does anyone have any study tips that really work for them, My book suggested the PURR method, but im not really to hot about it???
Clinicals dont start until October, im kind of worried about my Blood Pressure check off, i have a hard time hearing the systolic number......???
I hope everyone has a GREAT week this week.
I make note cards in addition to my notes with answers on one side and the facts on the other and quiz myself. Also, alphabet cues work well or acronyms work well too. Another suggestion maybe try making a motto or phrase to help job your memory or mnemonics. Little pictures or rhymes help alot and when you remember it during your test, it makes you smile and helps relieve a little test anxiety!
Me too!!
I already have plenty lying around the house, but when I went to by my shoes I saw this pulse time stethoscope in which have a clock on the stethoscope and I just say to myself "this is so cool, I must have" and I got it. However, I was not thinking about much much I was actually spending.
Yikes! I begin tomorrow. We had orientation back on August 7th. I got nervous just hearing all the information and the money it will cost us. We are required to join both the local and national chapters of NSA. I haven't read anything but a few pages in one of my books that I deemed interesting. The Fundamentals of Nursing book is HUGE and I had to take it the same day as that dang Mosby Physical Examination Guide. To the poster mstacyi: man you got your books cheap! I spent about $348 on what would've been ~$600. Thanks to my new friend bigwords.com, I saved some moollah!
I don't really have a specific Fundamentals of Nursing class, per say. I got these:
Perspectives on Health Care Delivery + lab (2)
Health Assessment + lab (3)
Math for Nurses (1; pass/fail)
Care of Familes + lab (2)
Epidemiological Perspectives for Nures + lab (3)
Medical Terminology (2; BIOL elective course of my choosing)
IDK which one is fundamentals although I have the Fundamentals book for Health Assessment. Maybe the Art and Science of Nursing for next semester when we begin clinicals?
