Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!
So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses
Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.
Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.
Ok, I had my orientation Friday and it was pretty good they had door prizes and I won a book "Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory test" saved $50+. But I spent $1100 ahhhhh! I just sttd there looking at the registar with mouth open. They don't even have Med-surg yet I have seen it and it must way 25lb. Anyway Ilucked out this fall and I have my Monday's off so I get an extra day to study. I am really super excited and scared and nervous all in one. I am really afraid of the medication math test they told us about, because I have to make a 90 on it and I have 3 times to do so after that your out of the program OMG!!!
Anyway, everyone have a great semester. Let me know haw ya'll are doing.
Well..., tomorrow is the big day that I have been working towards for a long time, I started pre. reqs. almost 20 years ago, but life got in the way. I hope that I do my best, always respecting my instructors, my patients, my classmates, and those still working on pre. reqs. I look forward to the times and memories that our class will experience. Lifelong bonds will form with people I don't yet know, during the next two years. There will be hugs, tears, happiness, long sleepless nights and even longer days. I will once again see people on their first day of life, and others on their last. Five semesters to obtain a huge volume of knowledge. Many have done this before me, so it must be humanly possible. It will be a wonderful experience and I look forward to the pinning and NCLEX, and that one day when I start making money again. Good luck to the class of 2011!
That was a great post! I am right there along with you, it took me eight yrs to get here and I am so happy for all who have waited so long to get here.

i can totally relate!! i've been waiting for this moment for over 10 yrs! i'm 32, so i know that i'm older thanmost of those in my classes, but don't care.... i'm so grateful for this opportunity & it took a lot of hard work & deterination to get here. i know that the toughest is yet to coe, but i know that we will all do it! we are all stronger than we think & somehow, somewhere, we'll conjure up the strength to get through this as we have all of the other difficult "lessons" we have learned in life. i'm also so grateful to have found allnurses! there is strength in nubers!! i look fwd. to this semester & look fwd. to hearing about everyone elses! i have orientation toorrow & start on tues, 9/1. i will be working f/t overnights fri - sun., (at least for this semester). i know that it is suggested that we don't, however, i have to pay bills...:zzzzz if anything, i ay cut down to fri & sat. night... we'll see. i'm just ranting now...! is anyone interested in starting a "study thread/group" for any of our classes this semester? if interested, please let me know... i'm looking fwd. to growing with all of you! with faith, :wshgrt:
anything is possible!:redbeathe:w00t::clpty:
:stdnrsrck: :hrns&wlcm:class of 2011 & 2012!!
ps-the "m" key is not working at all times as you can see in y post~ sorry...
Erin,
A study thread sounds great to me, not sure how we could coordinate, as there may be variation on what we need to study at any one time. I am 43 and older than most of my classmates, no big deal to me though. The group seems far more serious than most of my pre req classmates, of course this was the first day of class. Made a couple of new friends today, I am normally kind of shy. Class was sort of an intro about the program in general, will be in the hospital in Oct.
I would definitely be interested in a study group! In case you don't know this, the Saunder's NCLEX study guide is a GREAT study tool. I read this several places and someone at orientation advised me to get it as well (this was after I already had bought it). You can go to the sections that you're studying and take tests and it gives you the rationales behind the right and wrong answers which further cements the information into your brain. I don't start until next week, but have read in many books that the more you take practice tests while studying, the better the information is retained. I don't know about anyone else, but if I understand the how's and why's of something, I remember it so much better! I also think that bouncing off different things with each other will be beneficial because we can give each other incite into the various areas. Great idea!
I had pharmacology (!) and pathophysiology today. Tomorrow I meed with my clinical instructor and have my first Foundations of Professional Nursing class. It feels weird to look at all the people in my pathophys class and realise that these are the people I am going to be with for the next 2 and a half years.
How was everyone else's first day of class??!!
Mine went well, but I'm already exhausted, lol...I just had Fundamentals today, but all we did was go over the syllabus and jump right into the first few chapters! I looked up what I needed to know for today last night, so I had already started studying and reading last night...Then after class I must have read for at least 4 hours+!!! I actually don't have class again until Wednesday's lab...So tomorrow will be more reading and studying.
But I know there will be harder things and I'm grateful and ready for the challenge! I'm still SO excited!!!!
Can't wait to hear about everyone else! GOOD LUCK!!
:paw::paw::paw: I don't have my first class until the 31st but we were given assignments due Monday and Tuesday in Fundamentals, Health Assessment, and Pharmacology! OMG!! I'm already stressed! Been reading and studying for two days (literally all day), my back hurts from sitting in hard chair all day Friday for orientation. Sheesh... what next!? But I'm still super-psyched!
