Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston?
We did lose several people the first qtr...some things come easier for some than for others. There are a lot of people that have healthcare experience and far less that have none. There are only 3 in my class that have none, me included. There are also a couple of teachers that we had 1st qtr. that you all don't have. My class and the class ahead of us have all lost people each qtr. so far. So, just stay up on everything. Thanks and good luck to you too!

Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston?
It's intense lol! It's a lot of information to absorb. 2nd qtr. puts your organization and prioritizing to the test (personally speaking). At least it did for our class. So far this qtr. things are ok....we'll see after this week...we have our first tests this week. Hope things are going well for you!! :)

Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston?
Once you have completed all pre-req's you APPLY for the nursing program. If you have already completed them then you can apply for the next nursing class. No different than being pre-nursing anywhere else and you still have to apply for a seat. No pre-req's are taken concurrently so all you take is nursing. Don't see why that would be unsettling.

ATI for each class
We found out right before finals that starting next qtr. we will have to take an ATI test for each class and it will count for 10% of our grade. Anyone have any feedback? Good, bad, ugly? Should I start going over it now? They gave us our ATI for Fundamentals already. Any thoughts, ideas, all are appreciated. Thanks :)

Where are all you SC nurses?
Hi ya'll I'm originally from Summerville. Joined the Army after HS and met my hubby while stationed in Germany. Spent the last 17yrs. going where Uncle Sam told us. Hubby retired last year and we now live in Columbia. We have 4 children 17, 16, 13, and 8. Not currently a nurse, but start NS on Monday 5 Oct. at South University here in Columbia.

am i doing this right?
I second this advice. My hubby just retired last year. It's tough having to work around Uncle Sam. I started pre-req's prior to his retirement and here I am starting nursing school on Monday. Compare programs in your area, both ADN and BSN and go from there. They should also let you know if they have waiting lists. To avoid waiting lists, I personally, opted for private BSN. Costs more but I wouldn't be on a waiting list that would take just as long for me to get my BSN. The LPN part isn't necessary, really. This is all definitely do-able, even with little ones. Best of luck to you.

Accelerated BSN Programs For Those Who Want To Move Into Nursing
I start an accelerated BSN program on Monday, Oct. 1. I just picked up books yesterday. We are strongly discouraged from working at all, even PT. 18mos, no breaks except for the couple of weeks between qtrs. I don't know if they allow externships the last couple of qtrs or not. Something I may ask at orientation Thurs. Guess I'm a statistic in that I'm one of the older, non-traditional students. I agree that it is best to finish any sciences in order. Some of the higher sciences may require Algebra and/or Chem first, but I found it best to tackle one science class along with any other pre-req's required. My school required all pre-req's to be completed prior to acceptance. Each school is different.

My Final Countdown!!!!
Thanks again, Kathy. I am definitely not that student. I always come to class prepared. I do understand that NS is a completely different beast entirely and I'm open to the fact that I may have to alter some of my study habits. And that's fine. I appreciate your [and your hubby's] advice. It's good to get info from the other side. Thank you! Kathy

My Final Countdown!!!!
Thanks, Kathy! Cramming doesn't work for me either. I read everything before lecture, take notes, go home, review, and type my notes out on the computer. Everyday. It's a lot of work, but it helps it to stick and knocks some of the cobwebs and dust-bunnies out! Repetition works. Thanks again. I appreciate your tid-bits, too. :)

My Final Countdown!!!!
Yeah, I got a MedSurg pocket notes book and not even starting MedSurg yet. I've gotten all my shots....still have the rest of the Hep series yet to do. Thanks. I've already started reading for Fundamentals and Phys. Assessment. Thanks again.

My Final Countdown!!!!
Update..... Picked up books this a.m. after dropping the kids off at school. 12 books, $773.00. Thank the Lord for financial aid! With so many books, hard to tell which goes with which class. Some are obvious, ie. Fundamentals and Health Assessment. It's all so very real now. Really real. Orientation is on Thursday. Order uniforms, get nursing kit that day as well. Just excited and wanted to share.

My Final Countdown!!!!
Thanks Zoe, Bandaid and Charlie! I'm excited/nervous still. I can't believe the time has finally come! I didn't expect to be so nervous though. I'm hoping to give an update after I start. I've been here forever reading everyone's posts on their first day of nursing school. Hopefully, I have a general understanding of what to expect. Thanks again!!
