The First Days of Nursing School by the Fall 2009ers!!!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Alright well I have been wanting to post this for a very long time! Since I first logged on to allnurses I couldn't wait until it was my turn to say, I am a nursing student!!!

So, technically, yesterday was my first day but I was only there for a couple hours. We went right into lecture about the history of nursing and how it's ever changing. We also learned about the different educational paths a nurse can take, but I already did that research beforehand on allnurses :p

Today was mainly orientation and a welcome to our nursing class. We went more in depth about what to expect and also dissected our huge textbook-like syllabus. I am not joking about the size of that syllabus, it's insane. Since starting I have been reading nonstop. We have already been assigned about five chapters to read from our fundamentals book, which is not the most interesting of reads, but it's doable. I'm just overwhelmed really, probably because they talked a lot about what is to come. Over the next month, three papers are due and at the end of each semester we are taking the ATI tests. If we fail those, well then we have to take the course over.

Today was also one of our lab days. So for lab, we watched two videos about ensuring infection control by washing hands and applying ppe and then of course we had to do it. The basics for right now. Tomorrow is another lab day, bedmaking and body mechanics. So I guess I should get back to reading a couple more chapters and stop playing around on allnurses. I am just so happy to have finally made it. I'm still in a state of shock. Somebody pinch me.

All the people who started, good luck! Our school require a 75% to pass and 74.9% equals failure. I have to re-test my million step bedmaking skill test. lol. Our instructor is incredibly strict on us and I took too long. Other than that, we have another skills eval on tuesday for range of motion, peri-care, and baths. It's all moving so fast. I just finished my second week and there is just so much information. One person from my class dropped. I'm hoping it was just personal issues and she didn't get discouraged or anything. We're all looking out for each other already. Alright well next monday is coming up, meaning more first days! I couldn't log on for a few days, too busy reading. lol.

I am also a pisces so my advice is read all you can on this site and get on amazon and check out Saunder's Student Nurse Planner and Test Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students by Nugent and Vitale. I have been reading and studying these as well as reading "How to Succeed in Nursing School and Maybe Even Love it" and they have given me lots of advice, websites and tips as well as this site and other nursing students. Keep looking on here and those of us who start before you can offer you advice to help you through so look as starting later as a good thing (although I do understand your frustration!) Good luck to you!

The olny thing i can say Ha ha. I been there done that. Best of luck it all up hill till your 4th semester. ( it's worth it)

Ugh. I've been going back and forth between being nervous and excited and nervous and now that I finally start on Monday I just want it to BE HERE ALREADY!!! First time I've ever wished for a Monday to get here sooner I think lol.

The sooner I get started the sooner I can graduate! ;)

Hi Everyone!

I too am so excited & cannot believe that the time is finally here! I find great comfort knowing that we all will be moving along with the same material at the same time; a great support for sure! Is anyone here from NJ? Specifically WPU? Looking forward to orientation on Tues, and classes beginning on Sept. 1st! Best of luck to all of us & I look foward to hearing about everyones experiences!

Our clinicals start in like 3 weeks or 2 weeks and they start at 6.am. so I will have to wake up at like 4:30 to 5 :stone

Week 1 is done. :yeah:

I'm not behind yet.

I passed the first quiz. Double

I'm still pretty jazzed about being a real student nurse. We got our badges today. First exam is next Friday. Got a lecture today that C=RN.

I need to work out a good study plan. I am not a good studier.

the best advice that i can give all of you new students is to focus on nursing school ONE EXAM at a time. Who cares what 4th semester critical care will be like; stress over the material you're being tested on currently. That's what I did and it worked for me. Clinicals didn't really stress me out that much as much as it seemed to some people. My theory was clinical was easy to pass... just show up, do what you're asked to do by the instructor, and you pass. If you fail lecture, well then you can just forget about going to clinical! I was always worried about my lecture grade. If you have a AWESOME clinical instructor then you'll use post-conference to review upcoming test material instead of that god awful, mundane, redundant "let's go around the table and tell us what you did today" (you'll be over that by 3rd semester)

I feel exactly the way peytonsmom says! We start a week from Sunday...yes, Sunday and I'm so excited and looking forward to it!

To those who have to get up early, try having to get up at 4 and be on the road by 4:45 to drive 1 1/2 to main campus for labs so I totally understand! :zzzzz Now, I am an early bird, but more like getting up between 6 and 630. It's easy when the sun is up, but come fall and winter when the sun isn't up yet....I may need to get a rooster! :D

And to the person who says they aren't good at studying, I think you'll find that since you want this so much, you will find the study-geek within!

We will survive! That should be our mantra and theme song! We're all star.pngs.

Our first week is done!! Pretty overwhelming. We had our first Unit Exam on thursday over legal/ethics in nursing and I managed to get a "A":yeah: I didnt read the chapters super in-depth, I just read the key points and listened to my lecture recordings and rewrote my notes. Nursing school questions are NOTHING like regular questions! omg! We had to pick multiple response questions and NCLEX stlye questions. I got lucky and guessed well on a couple of them. I thought the test was easy-ish, but some people still managed to fail, including the girl I sit next to :( I want to help her, but she told me later "Oh, well I didn't really study that much" :uhoh21: ????? So it's only a week in and I am already having a moral dilema, do I help someone who doesn't want to help themselves? I really like her and want her to pass. hmmm....

anyway. We learned how to give a bed bath after our test on Thursday. we went over hygiene. This week I have vital signs demo, practice and then our first skills check off!!! yikes!! I am really nervous about that. I am trying to enjoy my weekend, but all I want to do is study and take notes! hahaha. I don't want to burn myself out the first month of school, so I am going to take the weekend off...does allnurses.com count? :D

I hope everyone out there is enjoying their program!! this is just the beginning, we have many years ahead of us. We can do it if we put the time and energy into it. If you ever get discouraged you can find me on here. We can be each other cheerleaders!!
