I'm starting nursing school in August. I bought the "ultimate nursing bag" which is a great little back except that it only has one strap. I know the future holds several sore neck muscles and shoulders. And most bags that go on your back with two straps aren't big enough to hold everything that we need to. I'm considering the.......
ROLLING BACKPACK
Any thoughts?
I had a rolling back pack. It was the only option, as my books weighed 1 ton each. Everyone had one. Dont worry about looking stupid, worry about the back injury you'll get if you try to carry those books in a backpack! Ouch!
By the way, my elbow is still trying to recover from lifting that stupid rolling back, up and down, up and down from the car and truck, and I graduated in Dec!! LOL.
I had planned to buy one before NS started in May, but I went to class first and realized quickly that I didn't need my books. My professors jump around in lecture, and occasionally contradict the book/teach us things that aren't in it. I'd rather scribble notes and have my recorder on, and learn things the way they want us to. I try to read before class (doesn't always happen), and I refer back to the book when I study. I just bring my notebooks, and if it's a day I have a break I choose one textbook and get some reading done. Everyone has their own learning style though, some of my classmates do somehow follow along in the text, and others use the downloaded version of the textbook and highlight/take notes on their laptops as they listen. I thought I'd wait and see until I shelled out extra money, when my ratty old Jansport still manages to hold everything I need for now.
Rolling backpacks are a lifesaver. Usually on a typical day I had my book (roughly 13,000lbs.) my three inch binder to store my notes (and I will need another one before class ends), my hole punch, usually my drug book, tylenol!!, some kind of candy for me and all the other people in class, and a gazzillion pens and pencils and highlighters. Only one person started out with a rolling backpack the first week of class.. by the end of the second week everyone had one.:roll
I don't know if I'll end up hauling my books around campus or not, but since the parking lot is not that close to the buildings, I think it will come in handy to have a rolling bag (I see people with them all over campus). This is the one I bought, I had a 20% off coupon and got free shipping too :).
Personally, I'll never understand the use of a rolling backpack. I remember how much of a nuisance they were in high school, the people who had them always made me late for class cuz they blocked the halls and tripped me accidently a bunch of times. I'm sticking with my Jansport that I've had forever. I think after carrying my 50+ lb. duffle on a 10 mile jog for the air force that a backpack for NS won't be too bad.
Does anybody have any experience with Jansport rolling bags? Do they last a good while? I know they have like supercute designs, I'm choosing between their wheeled or regular backpacks. I figure if you gotta drag along a rolling backpack, you might as well get a supercute one :)
I have 2 of the jansport rollers. I always forgot something when I was switching my books so I found a 2nd bag on clearance at a shoe store. I have had no problems w/snow, just the usual complaints with the stairs or curbs! 2nd year now for 1 bag and the other bag I've had for 2 semesters.

When I first started my prereq's 2 years ago I bought a regular old backpack from Walmart or Target or something, it lasted about 2 months before it fell apart. I was forced to buy a new backpack on campus, and they only carried Jansport, so I bought one and it lasted me the remaining 2 years. On some days I would have my A&P & Micro texts and binders in it, I weighed it once and it was seriously over 30 lbs and it is still in tip top shape.
I wanted a rolling backpack with the same quality and everyone at my school had the Jansport rolling backpack, so I just bought one. I bought the Driver 8 model as opposed to the Superbreak because the Driver 8 has a padded back and straps for when you use it as a regular backpack, it also weighs less.
I just bought in online from ebags, regular price is about $90 they have it for $67 w/ free shipping.
Oh, and btw, Jansport has lifetime warranties on their products so if it does break you can always get it repaired or send it back for a new one...this was a HUGE seller for me. I wanted that Zuca bag that everyone is talking about but I may have to wait for Christmas, I'm so poor right now!
Hope this helps!

I use the rolling back pack w/out ridicule! And so does about 75% of my classmates. We wized-up!

Like I said I didn't have a rolling backpack, but it woulda been nice! When I went to class I always brought my books for the class .... not just to follow along during the lecture, but also because we'd do some of the exercises/questions within the chapters during class. Also, we had a study group that would get together and study between classes sometimes.
Sounds like some people don't need to take books to class .... all the better! Obviously, no need for a rolling backpack in those cases
