The CEO said WHAT!!!!

Nurses Relations

Published

I was in a public meeting the other day where the CEO of my 860 bed hospital said, "My hospital would be better off without nurses."

I threw up in my mouth.

Now why would he say such a thing?

Since then, every single Nurse Manager has resigned.

Should I start looking for another job? What is the health care world coming to?

OP, tell us the details so we can intelligently discuss this. You are teasing us, so far. Not saying you mean to, just how can we say anything without the background, updates, etc. C'mon, play fair.

Also, who is running the show without any managers? Who's making the schedules, assignments, etc. Believe it or not, we do need some managers.

I bet they are using drip rates in Joplin today. Just because we don't use these skills on a daily basis doesn't mean we don't use them, or need them EVER. ;)

Ugh, I just saw that on the news and it made my heart sink seeing the hospital parking lot.

I agree, just because we dont use it all the time doesn't mean we dont need to know it. I can say this because I have only been a nurse for a year, and I'm sure people would argue with me, but I'm okay with letting technology take over some of the things that a human can easily make a mistake on and kill somebody (like drip rates). I'm not too proud to think I have to mix my own meds and do my own drip rates ALL the time, because I know at the end of my 13th hour, sometimes my brain is a little foggy.

A little off topic, but my :twocents: . Bet that CEO can't just rely on the pumps, though! :lol2:

OK, sure then he and the doctors can come do our jobs on the floor including following all the ridiculous policies set by him and his friends. See how fast he takes back what he said and apologizes on his knees.

That CEO was probably drunk, sick or on drugs, his comment is soooooo ridiculous and filled with stupidity that we should all just laugh and feel sorry for his way of thinking!!!!!:lol2:

I work in a small hospital and our CEO has said the same thing. He did change his tune however after he was a patient and he saw first hand all the work the nurses do in addition to "just taking care of the patients".

I can not help but wonder why oh why no one seems to respect the job that we do now men do not get upset but I am wondering is it because nursing is pretty much female dominated field and since women were treated as second class citizens for so long is this mentality accepted be seen and not heard and remember in FN day nursing was a dirty word and their was much disdain for nursing. Consider this if this was a predominately male field as doctors. Has been look at the prestige they have had in the community for forever would our profession be well respected as well does make you think or is that just me

I'm sorry but I don't understand the focus of what you're trying to say. I'm getting a feel that you don't think nursing is respectable or might me better if more men were nurses?

I don't know your point of reference but Nurses/Nursing is one of the most respected occupations in the world.

Throw that into the universe like he has and karma will come and bite you harshly. He's gonna become gravely ill and guess who will be there in his hours of need? His dog? I think not.

I once had a CFO (who, for some unkown reason was in charge of the nursing department) tell me that we were "a draining, bleeding wound in the budget. " i thanked her and reminded her kindly that without a Nursing department her facility would not exist and she would not have a job.
