If you could do it again, what career would you choose to pursue instead of Nursing? What are your reasons?

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

I might have answered in that thread linked above, but I'd stay home with my 5 kids if I didn't love my job so much.

I do not regret the fact that I became a nurse.

There are other things I regret like moving out into the "sticks" where the joy of the day and entertainment du jour is to browse TJMaxx and Starbucks - the 2 "in" locations....

LOL - everyone's perspective on "sticks" is different.

I live in the "sticks" and the population in the town is about 600. There is no Starbucks or TJMaxx. But there is a famous waterfall, a couple of volcanoes, lots of streams and rivers, etc.

Specializes in Pedi.

My 2 careers of choice would be Supreme Court Justice or professional world traveler.

In reality, I'll just stick with nursing.

I would have like to be an archeologist and discover hidden civilization and such but nursing seemed more realistic. [emoji40]

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

I don't regret anything. I became a nurse late in life. I tend to go where my life takes me and in my late 40s, I became a nurse. I love it. I regret nothing. Everything I have done has led to where I am today. Wouldn't change a thing :)

LOL - true enough !

"sticks" is the 20 000 people town I live in - I was used to cities with 250 000 plus and before I moved to the sticks a million people city. I felt I was moving to a ghost town.

My husband tricked me into believing we would move into a city but once I figured out that "the city" was actually a town 23 miles out of the city it was too late to change it ....

Specializes in LTC, SNF, Rehab, Hospice.

Not going back for my RN much sooner. OR even just going for my RN and not feeling stuck as an LPN, like I do right now.

I don't regret it at all but sometimes I have bad days, as everyone does, and ask myself "what was I thinking going to nursing school?!" But when I think about other careers I don't know what else I'd do.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.
Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I tell my children if they are interested in healthcare to be anything but the nurse. Pharmacist, PT, OT, PA, Physician, Respiratory, or whatever else. Nurses work long hours with little to no breaks or respect, often short staffed, and the buck ends with them. Ice not cold enough? Nurse's fault. 602 did not get Dilaudid exactly 2 hrs from last dose? Nurse's fault. No CNAs today so patients were in filth longer? Nurse's fault. The nurse is at the bottom of the hill with arms wide open and we all know what rolls downhill. I graduate with my DNP in May because I was so fed up with patient satisfaction & the Burger King drive thru mentality.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I regret being a nurse because I thought I was going to be an educated professional and I was going to be treated like an educated professional in return... but actually we are treated like the ultimate waitresses who also happen to be the middlemen for disagreements between the family and the MDs, MRI and respiratory, lab and the MDs, and pretty much anyone else who has anything to do with the patient, because it would be way too complicated for them to talk to each other and they just have to go through us instead. Oh, and we also have our own jobs to do.

I'm just so tired of being responsible for everyone else's jobs! I want to be responsible for MY work, kthnx.
