Hello everyone:
I just had to vent about this recent video that I saw on Comcast "The Fan". It is a video about a new requirement that one Spain hospital is requiring of their nurses. The newscast states that these nurses must wear mini-skirts in order to receive a bonus each month. But, if that were not bad enough in itself, the way the Fox News crew that talk about the newscast is even more disturbing. I pray that one day these sickening comments and stereotypes will go away. If any of you have a way to spread the word that this is not the way that nurses need to be portrayed, please pass this along and share this story/video or post here how others can help and let's help stop the sexist views of our profession.
Umm, I wouldn't buy that! *hides ridiculous beety boop nursing bag behind her*.
That's cute! I must admit I have been tempted a time or two. But, Betty Boop dressed up in a short, tight nursing dress with a needle in her hand saying "Luv A Nurse" is not a great image for nursing. It is cute, but on principle- I couldn't go there.

aaaaah...
and therein lies the mystery.
i had no idea as to why betty boop was offensive.
but if she's dressed as a nurse w/a sexy image, pffffffffffffft.

Well what can I say other than this was a pathetic video. For the record I'm a Male Nurse and Nurses in general are not nearly as respected as they should be.
I know that a female co-worker of mine was reported to a nurse manager because she was wearing thong underwear (white thongs for clarification) by another co-worker. If that wasn't bad enough, the nurse manager (female) actually told this co-worker that she needs to purchase appropriate underwear. What's appropriate underwear when it's clearly not visible through the uniform?
This co-worker is a friend and I had to assure her that it wasn't me who reported her because I personally think that she has a great backside and we both laughed. After the laughter I encouraged her to file a harassment charge against the nurse manager. Unfortunately it didn't go any where.
One of the many reasons for this ongoing degregation and exploitation of nurses is that nursing is a female dominated workforce and those who are represented by labour organizations, well most of these labour organizations are male dominated.
I'll never forget what one nurse manager (different from the one mentioned earlier) told me before she retired when there was a chnage in union representaion and new administration, "It's a return of the old boys club". Wow was she ever right.
For those of you who want to file harassment charges with your particular labour organization, I first recomend that you read The Bully at Work: What you can do to stop the Hurt and Reclaim your dignity on the Job by Gary Namie and Ruth Namie and read the sections on Unions. You're not as well represented as you think. In closure I'll state this:
Nurses are to be treated with respect not exploited.
