Hello everyone:
I just had to vent about this recent video that I saw on Comcast "The Fan". It is a video about a new requirement that one Spain hospital is requiring of their nurses. The newscast states that these nurses must wear mini-skirts in order to receive a bonus each month. But, if that were not bad enough in itself, the way the Fox News crew that talk about the newscast is even more disturbing. I pray that one day these sickening comments and stereotypes will go away. If any of you have a way to spread the word that this is not the way that nurses need to be portrayed, please pass this along and share this story/video or post here how others can help and let's help stop the sexist views of our profession.
That was AWFUL! I couldn't believe it and then the news people, including the ladies, going along with it- ridiculous!I do want to make an additional comment on the bad image of nursing. NURSES, PLEASE STOP BUYING THOSE RIDICULOUS BETTY BOOP NURSING BAGS- it only perpetuates the sterotype!
Last year the Nursing Image Leader (or something like that) of our SNA had one. That troubled me.
Oh THANK YOU! I'm so glad someone agrees with me. There's nothing more realistic about nursing than wearing a tight white dress and a cap and leaning seductively over a motorcycle. Give me a break.
I hate Betty Boop.
Top 10 Sexiest Jobs, #6: Nurse!
Tell ya what, careerbuilder.com, come see how sexy I am wrapped in an insufferably hot plastic iso gown, complete with shield mask, sweaty forehead, and fogged up glasses. Did I mention I'm wrist deep in C. Diff?
Not only that, I'm pretty sure that 'feeling sexy at work' was about #18584843 on my Why I Want to Be a Nurse list. If such a list existed.
I hate the media.
Fox News doesn't think and the women are on there aren't even intelligent enough to get through college . They and the others ought to be ashamed . Spain is Spain and they have a macho society but for our news networks to carry that and then one commentator to say nurses aren't attractive is sexist. I don't watch Fox News over all because of all the garbage in general. As one poster said before Not News.
I would like to see those chicks on there or those so called men do a day in a life of a nurse or EMT or doctor... stupid people stupid network..
Thats probably the reason I still get grabbed and talked to like I am a waitress.... :angryfire
The original story about a hospital in Spain annoyed me, but did not offend. However, the nearly three-minute blathering byfour people on Fox News about this story offended me to no end.
Comments such as "if nurses showed more leg, male patients would feel better and get out of bed faster" left me speechless. Although not as much so as the first comment, immediately after the Mediao pinup of a 'nurse' was shown on the screen: "that's a REGISTERED NURSE, guys!!". Umm...sure it is. I pose for Playboy on my weekends off.
How about the bimbo who announced that nurses should "flaunt" what they've got--while it didn't surprise me, considering the SOURCE--it saddened me.
The most offensive part of all that nonsense was the guy who said that he's found nurses to no longer be attractive, but instead "big hands, bad breath, just ugly". Unreal. Next time, I'll be sure to judge my comedians and 'news' anchors by the same criteria. Not how good they are at their job, but HOW BIG THEIR HANDS ARE.
Lost my "edit" key somewhere, so....
I had another thought after posting. It was that perhaps that idiot who announced he spends alot of time hospitalized, and didn't like the unattractive nurses should visit our unit.
By that, I mean that we have as one of our BEST nurses, a less-than-beautiful woman with tons of nursing experience, and he'd be lucky to have her as his nurse. BUT instead we'd make sure he was assigned to our last hire: she's young, she's pretty, she somehow got a nursing license (we're not sure how yet). But what she doesn't know about nursing could fill a dumptruck. I honestly don't think she's going to make it off of orientation before she injures someone. But that's ok: she's CUTE!! :uhoh21:
WOW!
Speechless indeed:
What were they thinking? I would like to know how much and what kind of feedback they are getting from this segment, maybe the entire nation thinks its a funny joke.
Our responsibility in this ...... Nursing does not meet all the criteria to be a "profession". Unfortunately because we are divided as a group, we will not advance further than we have. We should all agree as a national organization, and require BSN as the minimum standard of practice for an RN license. Other health care professions require a BS degree; along with it, comes higher respect and higher wages. Over time, perceptions would start to change. It would help to prevent others from viewing us as waitresses or stewardesses, or maids; over time.......
Cathmarm:
I know that this is getting off topic here but I must disagree with you. I do not agree that we must come together nationally and require a BSN for an RN degree. I am currently in an ADN program and have spoken with many professionals in the nursing field and they agree that ADN prepared nurses are just as prepared as BSN nurses. I believe that the real division amongst us is the fact that there are those who feel BSN prepared RNs are more qualified than ADN or hospital-acquired degreed RNs. Why is it that this seems to be a continuing problem? There have been many studies conducted to show that ADN and BSN prepared RNs have the same competency when taking care of patients. If it were not for the other degrees that are offered (other than BSN and higher) the nursing shortage would be even more critical than it is today. We should really stop squabbling over what type of degree a person has and look at how competent and safety-oriented they are. If the boards of nursing and the NCLEX preparers allow ADN graduates, why must there continue to be an issue with other nurses and nursing agencies? Honestly, the issue could easily be resolved if all of the national nursing associations would come together and state that ADN and higher degrees are the accepted paths for an RN degree (which was true for many years). Unfortunately, there has been one national association that has disagreed on a public level and felt a BSN degree should be the starting level and this has restarted the whole controversy. I mean, really, why should it matter what path I took to get my education if I am competent, caring, safe, and QUALIFIED to work as an RN?
This is obviously a comedic look at the news. I find it no more offensive than the Daily Show although it's not as well done. Since I work in Arizona, I don't think my hospital will ever require me to wear a dress but if they do I'll either wear one or vote with my license and work elsewhere. I've never visited or worked in Spain but will try to be sensitive to their culture and traditions and will not disparage them.
OH MY GOD!!! I'm in a BSN program right now, and I've already had my share of sexist comments from patients, a couple docs, and a respiratory therapist. One comment was directed towards a patient while I was standing off to the side: "See how cute this girl is, there are tons of them just like her at the nurses' station. I have to control myself" ...i was like "UM??"
On the other hand, this nursing dress is kinda cute!
here is the email i sent to fox.
to whom it may concern,
i was directed to a link from a nursing web site regarding a discussion about nurses in spain being required to wear miniskirts to get a bonus. i am shocked and offended. not so much at the hospital requirement. i realize that spain is a male dominated country. what offends me is the humor displayed on this video about nurses. it is inappropriate, juvenile and perpetuates the image of the "naughty nurse." as i am sure you can tell, i am a registered nurse. a real registered nurse. not the Mediao picture nurse posted on the video. i have a four year degree and i worked just as hard form mine as any woman who is an executive or teacher.
since i work an inpatient hospice unit, i deal with dying patients and their families every day of my working life. on my way to work every single day i pray that i will bring comfort and peace to my patients. when they are alive, i speak softly, turn them gently and give them whatever medication they need to be free of pain. i sit with their families and listen to their stories. many times we laugh and cry over the life review as we all validate the impact of the life lived. i have cared for the very, very rich and the very, very poor. my patients have been attorneys, senators, accountants. they have been drug addicts and the mentally ill. they all have received the same care. when they die, i bath them head to toe. i hold their grieving loved ones in my arms and often let my own tears fall. i bet if you ask the families in a year, they wouldn't remember how big my hands are, what my breath smells like or what i had on. but, i would bet my next pay they would remember how i made them feel.
i realize that this segment was suppose to be funny. it wasn't.http://www.comcast.net/data/fan/html...an/default.xml

This is typical for Fox. Why does anyone watch Fox "news?"
By the way, females at Fox news don't wear "the pants" either. Watch the video at this link:
