Starting Salary [new grad]?

Published

Salary seems to be a fuzzy topic when it comes to new grads, the students in my cohort all have different expectations. We were wondering what all of you at allnurses would have to say. Hopefully, you are comfortable to share your starting salary.

If you have started as a new grad in the last 4 years, please reply with the city/state/department/ADN or BSN and hourly rate.

We are hoping it will be beneficial to know what to expect vs getting sticker shock! Thank you allnurses!

Specializes in Oncology.

lol maywu I am stuck in ltc/rehab... wish I could find anything else!

22.62 per hour here in Florida. ADN, first nursing job, zero hospital experience.

This is an LTAC

Specializes in Emergency, Pre-Op, PACU, OR.

$25, Emergency Department, BSN

mine is for day shift btw

Community hospital - med surg, mid-sized midwestern city, $23/hr.

In CA, salaries are higher along with the cost of living, if you live in the right place (meaning you might have to commute or find more shared housing), it's not as bad as most people find out, being a CA person all my life.

These are current starting salaries per hour without any mention of the diff's and it's numbers posted on their hiring sites or friends who are already in:

CHLA....$24.00

UCLA...$35.00

Stanford...$47.00

Cedars...$32.50

UC Davis Med...$46.24

The higher salaries are the hospitals located in the Northern CA areas. They also have minimum 3.50 overall GPA's to be considered and so stated in their application minimum requirements. It is very possible to make close to $100K in those hospitals with the diff's for night, evening and holiday's.

All hospitals are BSN preferred only.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

Started out in the southeast, ADN. Psych since day 1. Base plus evening/weekend diff came to about $26 hour...which was higher than what most new grads got in that area: most are lucky to break $23-24 an hour, even with the NOC shift diff included.

Specializes in Med/Surg,Cardiac.

West TN, ADN (no difference in pay for BSN though): all units pay the same at the hospital: $21.10 base, $1 bedside, $3.50 nights, $1.50 weekends

Another hospital in the same area $20.60 base, $2.50 for 1500-1900, then $3.50 for nights. Extra $5 for weekends.

Both required you pay part of your health insurance. Benefits were lacking.

I haven't been working long, but I realize that a high hourly rate doesn't always mean the best employer. Especially when you're paying $75 per pay period for crappy individual health insurance.

Chicago burbs/Womens Hosp/ADN (with BS in Bio)/$26 base plus awesome differentials and benefits

Specializes in ICU.

BSN in middle Illinois, medical/oncology floor: 20.60 with 10% night diff.

I'm just starting nursing school but my wife just graduated and got a job.

Small hospital in TX. BSN. PCU/telemetry/step-down unit.

$21/hr base + $3 for weekends and $3 for nights. Night diff. begins at 1500 and weekend begins at 1500 on Friday. She also received a decent sign-on bonus. We thought sign on bonuses were a thing of the past, apparently not everywhere!

Specializes in Reproductive & Public Health.

Western Mass, pediatric home care. Hired as an ADN new grad for 30.75/hour doing overnight private duty. No benefits.

I was also offered 28.50 at a local hospital (per diem) , 26/hour at a nursing home (with benefits) and 23.75 at a state long term acute care hospital (with benefits).

So even in my tiny corner of the map, salaries range widely for new graduates.
