Starting Salary [new grad]?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Salary seems to be a fuzzy topic when it comes to new grads, the students in my cohort all have different expectations. We were wondering what all of you at allnurses would have to say. Hopefully, you are comfortable to share your starting salary.

If you have started as a new grad in the last 4 years, please reply with the city/state/department/ADN or BSN and hourly rate.

We are hoping it will be beneficial to know what to expect vs getting sticker shock! Thank you allnurses!

Specializes in Oncology.

In 2009 I was a new grad ADN at a hospital in Southern California and made $29.03 an hour, base. I did get night and weekend differentials but I can't remember what they were. I think BSN's made about $1.50 more than ADN's at that time.

Chicago suburbs 26.95 an hour with 3.50 for nights. BSN new grad starting pay (May '11 grad) and it's down the street and the unit I wanted, ICU. I know one of the big hospitals in rockford start new grads (BSN not sure about ADN) at 24 an hour.

I'm a May 2012 grad - I applied for Parkland in Dallas, but didn't get in - Residency would have paid 24.52 hr plus evening, night, & weekend diff, Other smaller hospitals in the area seem to start as low as $20 plus shift diff. ADN/BSN did not matter - applied and interviewed March 2012, for L&D and NICU. Should have cast my net wider.... but I want to be a CNM so I was trying to focus in.

Baltimore: $26.38 base salary, with rotating D/N 28.89/hr plus excellent benefits at magnet hospital. From other local new grads I hear the starting salaries average around $26. Many new grads are having trouble finding work here :(

Eastern SC - 1 of the bigger hospitals start at $23.66 plus differentials, another starts lower but higher differentials for nights & wknds.

Specializes in Hospice / Psych / RNAC.

Starting "union" hourly wage for an RN I is $32.50 here in our 50th state. Pay scale goes up quickly as years of experience cumulate. The doctor's offices and clinics are a different story though. I was once offered $12 an hour in an ob/gyn clinic but these days it appears to me that the clinics and offices are staffed mostly with med techs.

Specializes in Emergency.

In SoCal, I work in a small community hospital in a desert city off the beaten path, non-benefitted, I make roughly $62k a year ($33.17/hr). This is my first RN job, and I have an ADN. I also have a BS in another field, but I don't think that played into the salary factor.

Specializes in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Flight.

Central IL- New grads $21.79/hr Shift diff: 2nd shift: +$1.25/3rds: $2.00 Weekend: $1.75

i didnt go into this field to make 6 figures+. ill take it! hahah

Western Arkansas. Pay here for new grads starts at $18 for days and $19 for nights plus a $2 shift diff for nights. Nothing extra as far as weekends go though. Kinda measly compared to most of the others on here. :/

Specializes in Emergency, Med-Surg, Progressive Care.

New graduate with ASN on a med-surg unit in rural Vermont. Base pay is $24.49/hr, night differential $4.00, weekend differential $2.00. Very good benefits, as well.

Starting wage here in western Colorado is about 23$ an hour at the hospital with your RN

Specializes in Med Surg - Renal.
