Hi! I am new here and hopefully can get some answers to my questions! Please be as honest as you can, that is why I am here. I am a 32 year old stay at home mom of 2 kids, ages 3 and 7. My DREAM is to go back to school for nursing, to be a mental health nurse to be exact. The problem is, I don't know if i am smart enough. I don't want any sympathy, that is just how I feel. In high school i was really bad in math and sciences. I graduated in 1993 from High school, then went on for my Associates degree which i got in 1995. After being a stay at home mom for 7 years, I really want to go back to school, for nursing. I have developed quite an interest in the mental health field. i would love to work with adolescents with substance abuse, eating disorders, depression etc. My community college offers the rn program for 2 years and i would recieve my associates in nursing. Since I already have my Associates degree, I would just have to take my CNA class, and some math and sciences. EVERYONE tells me that I am getting in over my head. That with 2 kids it will be so hard to do the nursing program. They say it is really intense and hard and time consuming. Do you think I can do it with 2 kids? Honestly? Also, is the math and science classes really hard? Do you use a lot of math and science once you become a nurse? How hard is it to be a nurse? I have to tell you, this is something I really want to do I just need some encouragement. Please, if there are any nurses out there that can shed some light, i would really appreciate it! I may not be good in math and science, but i could study real hard and learn it, i have to tell you i love people and i am very kind and compassionate and caring. I treat everyone like they are my mom, or dad and that can't be learned.
Do you think it is better to go for 1 year, become an LPN, work as an LPN to get some experinece then go back for RN?
Thanks for your time everyone, and hope to hear some responses!!

I went back to school August 05, in July of 06, I was accepted in the RN program. My first semester of school I took 16 credit hours, my second I took 15, including A&P 2 and micro. I didn't expect to get in the program so quick, but that is what hard work and determination will get you. By the way my husband and I had just seperated, I had three kids, I was only 26, and I worked full time, and I still work part time now. No, it has not been easy, but now that my husband and I have worked things out it has gotten easier. NEVER LET ANYBODY TELL YOU, YOU CAN'T, OR IT IS TOO HARD. Your future is yours for the taking.
Peace and Blessings

yuyu,
I don't think you will know unless you try. If this is something you really want to do - nothing should stand in your way even with managing a family.
Now, as for the math & science. If you want to use me as a comparison - I did not do all that great in high school in math and science....Part of that was my fault I will admit - and some of it was in part with the teachers I had at the time that didn't really seem to care if you learned anything or not.
I am not downing teachers because I have had some good ones too - but at the school I went to - my experiences were less than stellar.
Now, once in college - I did well with math and science. Of course I had more incentives such as $$$ but this also worked in my favor because the professors realized we were paying a premium for a good education and most seemed to really try to help us learn.
I would highly suggest talking with an admissions counselor and discuss perhaps taking a couple of entry level math and science classes there. You will get back into the school routine that way and acquainted with the math and science content.
Good luck,
Ginger

Hi! Im sure youre smart enough! It could be done with kids.I personally had four kids under the age of ten when I got my LPN.I think you should try that route.since it is one year full time. And that was very intense. You will need a lot of familial support,to help with your kids.My husband was awsome! If you have your LPN you could work, flexible and still makegood money, and if then you want to go back for RN,you could try a bridge program.I say go for it! you sound like you need a little self confidence. You could always find astudy group in nursing school to help with math and science.Good luck

I think if it is something you really want to do then you can do it giving it your best shot. Have some confidence in yourself and things will work out. I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do

I definately think you should give it a try. I graduated from nursing school at age 20, but didn't go back for my BSN till I was 38. I had 2 kids, husband, house, job, the usual stuff going on during life. I will say math was my weak point and the statistics class nearly killed me-I did get a "B". But I did it!!! My family was very supportive and that was a great help. If it's your life dream, go for it. When I was debating about going back, a friend told me that the years are going by weather you're in school or not so you might as well try.

It seems you have a real calling to help people as a mental health nurse. In light of all the good you could do, doesn't your insecurity seem self-indulgent? Someone out there is going to need your help. Put your doubts behind you.

I did the RN thing, while Fathering and raising 7 kids, working 60 plus hours a week, being on call 24/7/52. If you want it you can do it.

I am also 32 and I am in RN school @ a community college 2nd semester. Had my AA in Graphic Design previously. I did HORRIBLE in Math & Science in H.S. & did not even take Algebra or Biology!! I still don't consider myself a Math Whiz ... I had to take Algebra twice in college, but it can be done! Just study hard and you can do it! I've taken Algebra, A&P I-II and Microbiology & received a B in all the classes.
As to the RN program being really hard, yes it is hard in the sense it is time consuming, but the material is not that difficult ... if you have time to study it can be done. It is totally do-able & if you have the determination to stick through all the bureaucratic B.S. than you are 1/2 way there! I truly think you should go for it! If I can do it, than anyone can

You absolutely can do it :)
I have two children (2 and 5) and will be starting the RN nursing program in August. I was also apprehensive about the sciences courses, but I took them one at a time (took 2 years to finish my pre-reqs but I had some other transfer credits from my English major) and I was able to get through them.
If it's that important to you, just make the decision to do it and don't let anyone tell you that you can't (including yourself!).
Keep us posted!!

You can do whatever you set your mind to. I am also waek in math but that will not keep me from giving up. There are tutorial class offered at all schools (I hope) that will help you with your weaknesses. I have 2 kids and I tried to go with just one child. I had a dead beat husband who was NOT supportive of me at all.I have remarried and I have a husband who will break his back, neck and butt to support me. DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM FOR ANYONE!!! Let people talk and say what they want. That goes to show u who really care you and who dosen't care. GOOD LUCK!!!

Oh yes you can do it!!! I will be 39 in 2 months.......Here's what I did as an inspiration for you to know that YES YOU CAN.....
I dropped out of HS at 5 months short of 16yo.......worked at many different jobs. Got nowhere fast. I got married at 20yo...had a baby right before I turned 21 (2 wks before)...and my baby got sick with meningitis& encephalitis & almost died at 3 weeks old....now if that's not alot to handle at a young age.I got divorced in 1991,never got any child support at all& had to get public assistance due to my circumstances. Then I went & got my GED in 1992. So I was a single mother with a severly disabled child who needed 24hr care by a nurse or myself...... I was able to finally go back to work waitressing and decided I didn't want to do that forever......so I ended up taking a couple of classes at night each semester starting in 1999. I did horrible on my test to get into a community college (rushed, didn't care)so I had to take reading to be able to take English, and a special math class to be able to take Intro Algebra......and believe me ..I was horrible at math and yes science in school, my dad however is a physics/chemistry brainiac...go figure that one out..I didn't luck out in that area.....I was great in English in HS though. I never cared though either in school so that's mostly my own darned fault!
Anywho...I just chipped away little by little ......even went to one nursing school, had a year down, and one year left but had one instructor that just hated me from the get go so she failed me out even when my other instructors prior gave rave reviews about me. .....so I left and transferred to an entire new school.......best thing I ever did! I almost didn't go back period. But I sucked it up & went back...and yes had to start from the beginning again with nursing (my credits were from a non accredited nursing school, so no accepting them) so I started all over again with nursing classes........It was really a blessing in disguise because I had phenomenal instructors who all were very supportive & really were very fantastic people who wanted to see us succeed...never once degrading any of us...I was even shocked after my 1st "experience" with the aforementioned instructor......so I just got back on track, & chalked that up as a learning experience....... and here I am today...proudly saying I am finally an RN......and I am going for my BSN hopefully in September as I will only have commit to 1 night a week to complete my BSN in 12-18 mos.......and I may go on even further for my MSN/CRNA.
Now mind you I have gone to school with my child going into the hospital many many times and doing school and the whole thing.......I just would always say "lets just get through today, & worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes" and that's how I did it......
I did it with all of that...and it took me 7 years to get a 2 year degree ......so never ever feel you can't do it...and never listen to those who discourage you from doing so....some people hate to see others move up in life out of jealousy because they aren't doing it or they regret not doing it...........do it for you & don't worry about negativity from others.........steer clear from negative influences.......and lastly........the time will go by faster than you know it......so I say go for your dreams!!!!!! Good Luck!!!!!
