SNOW!!!

Published

Love unexpected snow days, off Friday, again on Monday and then a 2hr delay this morning! We have 3 snow days built in that we don't get back if they are not used so I love having those unexpected days off. I got stuff accomplished at home and lots of grad school work done too! Of course I keep thinking it's Monday...

High of 60 degrees with beautiful blue sunny skies here in Texas. Too bad I don't have a window to see out of my cave, though.

I have a cave, too. :(

Me too. In my old school, I could at least see a window from my office. Here I am 50 feet and 2 doors from the nearest window.

I am a lurker on the school nurse board but I'm so curious about SNOW DAYS that I am coming out of hiding! How much snow does it take to get a day off?

Where I live the only reason for not having to go to work during the winter is a crazy winterstorm but the school is always open so if you can possible get to work you go. It doesn't matter if there is snow up to the kids waist they come to school and go out to play. Even now when the playground is coverend in ice they go out during recess 2-3x a day.

Here in the dakotas it takes ALOT to call school off. Basically a full blown, can't see your hand in front of your face blizzard before its called off. Plenty of 2 hour late starts to let the plows clear off the roads. Kids go outside too unless actively raining, or such a degree below zero that its unsafe.

Totally depend on the area you work in. I am in Chicagoland and they close up if it is determined that the roads are unsafe for bus travel, usually around 6 inches that they haven't had time to plow. Wind will also be a factor if the snow is blowing across the road causing whiteout conditions. In warmer climates, they close with even a small amount because towns do not have the equipment or manpower to make the roads safe for travel.

In north Missouri, it depends. It is usually a decision that the District Administrator and transportation people make. There is more that is taken into consideration than just the amount of snow. One of my Districts almost never lets out. This is because it is a K-8 school and there are no student drivers. Sometimes, we have 2 hour late starts which makes a huge difference. We live in a very rural area, there have been massive cuts to Missouri Dept of Transportation. This has caused ALOT less snow removal and treatments for ice on our roads. OH THE JOYS. In my schools that are more likely to let out for snow, we probably average 3 a year.

Northern Indiana... 4 built in snow days... haven't used any yet... so unusual. Have had two, two hour delays for below zero wind chills last month. That's it. We've barely had any snow this year. An inch or two every few weeks. No major snowfalls or storms. I guess i will take it since we are projected to be done May 25, and I'd rather not add on, but a random snow day would be nice!

I just moved to ND from FL a few months ago. In the words of Illidan Stormrage...I was not prepared :bluecry1:

Although my sources say the winter up here has been very very weird this year. It was 45 on Saturday, and it's 7 today...and we got about 4 inches of snow overnight!
