Sex, Porn & Roto-Prone Beds.....

Published

Some mornings I log on, only to turn around and leave. What is with the folks who appear to be out to monopolize the forum? Are they in a competition with each other as to who can post the most threads? Do they not have lives? Are they dangerous, as in "I want to learn how to program this infusion pump without actually having a job that requires it"?

I thought this was another post from nursingaround1. Lol.

First thing I thought as well hahahaha

I don't frequent the site enough to notice, Klone do you have some statistics on this? (Not being a wiseass, just honestly interested in the numbers. What I have noticed is more "get money quick" spam posts lately.

Of course I don't keep stats. But I've been an active member here for over 10 years. So yeah, I think my observations are not totally without merit.

Of course, it could also just be a case of confirmation bias.

As you are a new member here are a few facts.......The admin and guide staff are all volunteer. We do the very best we can. If you see any posts that are objectionable or offensive/violation of the TOS (Terms of Service) Please report them by clicking the yellow triangle at the bottom of every post and type a brief thought.

The spam posts are addressed when reported and sent to a spam reporting system.

We do our best but when there are 900,000 registered members it can be difficult to keep up.

Impressive!! Will do as adviced Esme. I feel fortunate that you even took the time to explain this to me, based on all the love I've seen for you here lately I feel like a celebrity just spoke to me :) thanks

It has become worse. It used to be we would see obvious "bait" threads for a couple of weeks per year, but this year it went on for several months. Those would be written by people with a passing familiarity with nursing and a neurotic love-hate attachment to nursing for reasons none of us will ever know, most likely.

Part of it is that our frequent posters notice the patterns more often, and call BS sooner. This angers the troll, and since most of them aren't very bright, they post more crap rather than taking a breather for a while.

I just loved it recently when the admins let one of these threads go on and on and then delivered a real decent verbal smackdown to the offending OP.

What is Your Strange Thread-- oops I mean Bed Story-- (sorry couldn't resist), I admit to being perplexed by that. I saw lots of urban legendy stuff there (dead person suddenly sits up and scares family etc) but the overall weirdness-- I will reserve judgement for now and hope they come back and explain.

There are several forums and at least one imageboard out there that specifically go out of their way to see who can elicit the best response from the group they are trolling. The biggest flags are a low post count and recent join date. If someone posts something questionable as their first post with a join date of June 2015, I would immediately think they are a troll. If their join date is July 2009 and they claim to be a lurker, I might be willing to believe it. Being a nursing forum, I would also look at some of the terminology used.

I agree. However, the internet brings all kinds, which makes things interesting. There are definitely quite a few odd posts lately. I usually click off the ones I would rather not engage in.

YES - Welcome back Esme!

There was a pretty good (aka controversial) thread months back from an anti-vaxxer. That was a wild thread! Loved all the truly knowledgable responses and kind of amazed that the OP kept coming back. Had to give the OP some credit there.

I also ended up signing up for Dr. Paul Offit's Vaccine History class due to that thread.

I've been here awhile too. I see this stuff come and go.

When I first started, there was a big brouhaha . . . . . can't even remember what it was about now.

There does seem to be some kind of ebb and flow to controversial threads. Personally I like the periods of time when these threads seem to run rampant. But then I am usually here for the entertainment and socializing instead of the education! Plus it's kind of nice to see some different "weird" topics come up. I sometimes get to the point where I decide to take a little break because I just can't stand one more PVT, "I had 82 questions, did I pass????" or ADN vs BSN thread. The variety of weirdness right now at least keeps things interesting.

PS Forgot to add...Welcome back Esme!!!
