Ridiculous Reasons to See the Nurse

So, we really need a place to log the ridiculous reasons some kids have to get out of class and come see the nurse. You know, those pressing medical problems like, "my lips hurt." I had that one today.

Earlier this year I had a student come see me because she had a hair on her tongue!!

Somewhere there is a teacher giving these kids a clinic pass for these visits!

What are the crazy reasons to see the nurse at your clinic??

To all you school nurses out there - I so enjoy reading your entries in this forum. Many things I would never have thought of so this is most informative. But threads like this one are precious.

Salud to all of you.

A first grader: "I can't button my pants". I buttoned his pants for him.

Me too! Some of those pants have buttons/snaps that are tough. And we know what happens when they can't ;) get them!

Had some kids come back form being out of the building and one had a fish hook stuck in his head.....

Another stuck his finger in the spot where a knot had been in a picnic table! you KNOW that the stuck finger was on YOUTUBE before I even got there! Then one of our custodial staff sprayed it with water!!!!!! So the wood swelled up around the finger. Yep the FD came and cut the wood to release the finger....

I can't tell you how many kids get sent to my office with the complaint "such and such place on my face hurts."

And 99% of the time it is because they have a zit.

I recently had a K student screaming in the hall all the way to my office "my belly hurts!". Yes everyone in the building could hear her screaming. When she finally got to the clinic and I got her calmed down enough to talk, it turns out her pants were too tight.

I have to say in my school it is the teachers who send these kids down. "I got hurt at the playground Saturday" no visible signs of anything?!?

My favorite from last year was "my cheeks hurt from blowing up balloons for field day."

A fifth-grader came to me on Friday with a complaint of "seeing spots." Upon questioning her a very little about recent activites, she said she had been outside, felt like she needed to sneeze and looked up at the sun. She said she looked up at the sun for a few seconds and had been seeing spots since. When I asked her how long it had been since she'd looked at the sun, she told me "just a couple of minutes ago." ;)

I had a student come in the other day because her wrist "popped". Not the result of a fall or bumping into something, rather it popped, much like a normal joint will do from time to time. Really?

Another one of my favorites: "My leg is itching". Well, scratch it. Sometimes an itch is just an itch, not some rare skin disease that is going to wipe out the entire school population.

I work in a high school so you can only imagine what I see/hear. 740 am school only has been in session 20 minutes kid comes to me complaining of headache. I ask did you eat breakfast this morning? Kid says, NO. Why not I didn't have time. All kids in my school get free breakfast and have time if they stop socializing. How long have you had this headache. Kid goes oh, for about 5 minutes.

Seriously??? Another kid come in asking can I call my mother? I ask for what? So, she can bring me lunch because I don't like the lunch here.

Another kid: Can I lay down? I ask why what is going on? I need to lay down I'm sleepy. Ummmm, seriously that is not going to fly by me I'm sending you back to class.

My experience from what teachers have told me is that the kid tells the teacher one thing that makes it sound like it is serious the kids are telling teachers I think I have Ebola or I think I have that bad virus going around. However, when they end up coming to me it is a totally different reason.

Most teachers will not send kids just for any reason. At least not at my school.

I have probably 100 hand made cards that each kid tells me exactly what I saw them for. lol I plan on making a portfolio with them so if I ever need to find another job I have at least 100 good references.

I could write a book (as most nurses can) about all the chaos that ensues and it so hysterical it becomes like a comedy skit. I don't get paid enough for my job but the suspense of "What is going to happen today" keeps me going back. :-)
