Ridiculous Reasons to See the Nurse

So, we really need a place to log the ridiculous reasons some kids have to get out of class and come see the nurse. You know, those pressing medical problems like, "my lips hurt." I had that one today.

Earlier this year I had a student come see me because she had a hair on her tongue!!

Somewhere there is a teacher giving these kids a clinic pass for these visits!

What are the crazy reasons to see the nurse at your clinic??

Yesterday we had freshman orientation day, which is a walkthrough of their class schedules, homeroom time, a cook out and a bunch of games they play to earn points for their homeroom. I had a freshman come in "My ankle really hurts and I don't know what I did to it, also my stomach hurts". Turns out the ankle was an blister from his new high-top shoes. Band-aid applied, another life saved. Go me. His stomach felt miraculously better after he used my bathroom for 30 seconds.

Then he came back 1.5 hours later "I tried playing basketball to make my stomach feel better, but that didn't work. {Really? I'm shocked!!} My teacher told me I should come here and lay down." My bed is covered in supplies, I am irritated with the teacher because now that the teacher said the student should lay down, now the student MUST lay down, and any other suggestion I make, like sit out, drink some water, suck it up there's only 1/2 hour of school left, etc will be met with "But my teacher said I could lay down!". I clear off my junk so the kid can lay down. Sigh.

If I can't use that as as excuse, no student can use that as excuse.

I had a student see me because she had rocks and dirt in her hair and her teacher wouldn't let her wash it in the bathroom sink by herself so she sent her to me to wash it for her.

Wow. Next you can offer mani/pedi days. And aromatherapy. Makes you wonder what they think we're doing in here.

Eyeglasses....BROKEN and I mean broken like snapped in half. "My teacher said you could fix these."

Not that I like having to fix popped out lenses either, but at least that I can generally do.

I tell the kids their glasses need a visit with their teachers tape dispenser and send them back...

I had a student come to my office with a note from the science teacher that said, "sleep there, not in science."

GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

That teacher needs to get control of his students. Unless the kid is sick (probably just bored)- this is a behavior issue, NOT nurse issue.

I find myself already getting really annoyed at the silly reasons kids AND their teachers think they need to see the nurse. Lots of new, young teachers today and I swear, they haven't got a clue!! They were all given guidelines for nurse visits at the start of school a week ago. What do you do to keep your annoyance in check after seeing your 3rd "feeling dizzy all of a sudden" in 1/2 hr from the same class? The teachers are so petrified of the parents, they're sending every-little-complaint up to be seen. Some of those students sat in my clinic for 45 minutes because I had so many other, real problems to deal with :banghead:

mc3:facepalm:
