"Cells are small and squishy, not at all like bricks." Bricks being large, hard an heavy...

Any other random sentences found in textbooks?

Haha I haven't noticed any quite like that, but I do notice product placement a lot in textbooks (like in my old math one: you have 2 bags of Lays chips, one weighs 8 oz, blah blah blah).

"... in appendix E you will find an oddly shaped checkerboard called the periodic table..."

"...Each cell alone obtains and digests its food, ejects its wastes, and carries out all the other activities necessary to keep itself alive and "buzzin' around on all cylinders"..."

There are a lot more. These are the ones that amused me the most last semester

"...this helps the cell digest foodstuffs."

yes, foodstuffs.

I like this thread haha. I'll keep an eye out for random things in my textbooks :)

"Understand that nurses do not have the power to cure anyone. They are only cheerleaders and supporters!"

Box 13-8, pg 332 of Maternal Child Nursing Care (Perry et al. 4th edition)

Man, that sentence just makes me swell with pride for nursing!

I really hope that's from an ancient textbook that you found in the library and not in a current edition. :uhoh3:

i am SO glad someone understands my humor! at times i would burst out in laughter from the weird things in my textbook XD! i'll have to try and remember one...

Regarding saliva...

"The mechanoreceptors are activated by virtually any mechanical stimulus in the mouth- even rubber bands."

Bizarre example -- makes me wonder about the author's habits.

Nope, it's brand new! We are using it in my class this very semester, and I just went and looked, and sure enough, that sentence is in there! It's in reference to treating pregnant substance abusers, and in context, it means you can't force anyone to quit using drugs, so it kind of makes sense, but I'm pretty sure there's more you can do then just be a cheerleader! Calling social services, giving meds to help with withdrawl, making referrals to AA or rehab or whatever, etc.
